You may not be able to make the trip this fall, but seriously consider NE Utah and NW CO for future camping trips. The Ashley NF and Dinosaur NP offer great CG's; most are probably shut down for the winter now. A really neat place is east of Jensen in Dinosaur NP, near Split Mountain. Nice sites and really handy to tour the park and see the petrogylphs and dinosaur digs. On the Ashley NF there are CG's in Flaming Gorge NRA plus a couple new CG's north of Roosevelt and Duchesne, contact the NF office in Vernal for info on their offerings. Nice thing about that part of Utah is that you can avoid the SLC traffic situation.

Ruby's Inn at Bryce.

At Zion there is a great campground in Springdale. Called Zion Canyon I think. We have driven thru it but not stayed there.

I DO NOT recommend Zion River in Hurrricane - nice place but very expensive and they nickel and dime you to death on top of it. If you want to shower before and ofter the pool there is a $1 charge to shower each time - that is just one example. But we did not have to worry about it as the pool and hot tub were not working and no reduction in the rate. No TV and no cell phones get out. And they overcharged us for WiFi which I found out when I got my Visa bill - it did not match the receipt. Calls and emails were useless; they never refunded me the money.

Moab - love it. We stay at Moab Valley RV Park. Do not recommend Spanish Trail.

Make sure you get to Capital Reef soon. Great place. Recommend Thousand Lakes.

Be safe - enjoy each day.

well I stayed at a couple of campgrounds and had to pay a buck or so extra for the shower. I guess it all depends on what the basic rate is. I appreciated it since it kept a lot of the rug rats out.
and I assume you disputed your visa bill and they knocked that charge off, or if not why not?

I'd recommend you stay in Panguitch 'cuz it's centrally located and you can hit Bryce, Cedar Breaks and Zion from there. There are 3-4 CG's at that location.

The Watchman CG in Zion NP has electricity, but no water/sewer hookups or showers. It does have a well-designed dump/water station on the way into the campground. The Watchman CG is along the river just inside the property line of the park. You can have dogs in the CG and but only on one trail (the Pa'rus trail along the river). I like being in the park and don't need all the amenities, especially since the campsites are much more spacious than anything commercial.

At Bryce we have stayed in Ruby's Inn--the kids will love it. Bryce NP is even less dog-friendly than Zion; dogs are not allowed on any trails or overlooks the last time I checked.

My rate at Zion - Good Sam rate - was $46. That was in 2005.

I'm going to add to this good suggestion-we just returned from a week at Wasatch Mountain State Park at Midway--about a 100 miles from your home and I can recommend it for Fall camping (Sept)--plenty to do in Heber for a family but more importantly, the campground was really quiet, clean, and private, plus, for us, it is adjacent to two fine golf courses that are inexpensive and fun to play! If you run out of options South--you are only 20 miles from Idaho and when you get up here, the fun and isolation really begin. Welcome to the neighborhood, Tremontin has to be a real change from Pennsylvania!
You will love the people, if not the wind--watch those roads around there in a blowing snow storm--they can white out in an instant--stay home.

zmotorsports--DH and I will be staying at Portal also. We'll be there at about the same time that you will--perhaps we'll meet up.

Regarding Watchman in Zion--we had planned to stay there, but they were closing for the season in October. I don't remember the exact date though. If you are thinking about staying there, then contact the National Park Service to check on reservations. I found their phone number at www.recreation.gov.

Zion River RV is one of our favorites--9 mile outside of the Zion Canyon. You can't go wrong and the shuttle system in Zion is fantastic. Drive through the tunnels--not with the RV-- and you will have a blast.

Look us up, we will be there Oct. 31 and leaving Nov. 2 to head home. Kind of a short trip but it is an outing. Mike.
