What engine? What belt? Serpentine or "V" belt?

How does one "fix" a fan belt? Adjust it....replace it....but "fix"?

Anyway, a "squeal" usually means: a)too loose b) worn out c) might need a new pully or two d) with extreme wear (real high milage) the alignment (pully(s) moving on shafts) can get out of whack.

G' luck!

Mary,

You really need to give some more details. Did it squeal when you drove away from the place that "fixed" it? Or did it just start doing it again some time after? Are you near the place that worked on it? And if so, can you return it to that place?

Chances are you will need to have someone make the adjustments - if that's what it takes. But my guess is that the tension on that belt was not set properly in the first place.

Good luck from me also. If I was still at Nehalem Bay State Park, I'd come and help you out. I'm at Clyde Holliday near John Day, OR now and won't be back in your area until next month.

P.S. It would have really helped in this case if you would have signed your name - especially with one like "Mary." The resonces would have been more appropriate, I'm sure. Guys are suppose to know this stuff - you know? Plus, I think it's just polite to do so when asking for help.

My wife had a failed serpentine chevy belt replaced at a gas station. They put in a NAPA belt that squealed in a week. Turns out, NAPA has two grades of belt. One made in Mexico and one US. They put in the cheaper Mexican belt, but charged us for the US belt. A US NAPA belt made the problem go away for a coupla years, now.

It may be a bad belt but, could be a weak tensioner. There are belt treatments that will help the problem for a while.

If it's a V-belt, I have had the pulley on the harmonic balancer rust and cause a squeal. The fix, replace the pulley.

The lack of response from the original poster seems to be a common thread in many of these "calls for help." Too bad, because the help would be much more appropriate if they either gave more details or had a complete profile which gave the info.
