My dealer says I have to use the new low ash oil in my 04 Chev Duramax/ Allison. Is this true? Does anyone know where to contact GM for a confermation on this. The differance in cost for an oil change and lube is appox $60.00 as it was, went up to $100.00 now. I think the dealer is trying to rip me off, but I want to be sure before I confront him. The dealer is "Power Chevrolet" at Superstition Springs Auto Mall in Mesa AZ.
Thanks

Since your engine does not have a DPF you do not need the low ash oil. LMM, yes, but not for your LLY.
Here is a link for you if you like to read about such things.
Low ash oil
I don't even know if you can get the regular high ash Rotella anymore? I think the last time I bought mine it was the low ash. It about doubled in price also.

look in your owners manual it will give you the code for the oil you need. on my 02 and 06 duramax i use either rotella or delo 400 oil and it meets the specs of what i need but like i said look in the diesel supplement in your owners manual usually in the glove box. hope this helps.

The current oil (CJ spec) has just about totally replaced the CI+ oil due to the 'low ash' oil required by the 07+ EPA diesels
So no matter what your owners manual calls for, about the only thing you can find on the shelves will be 'low ash' CJ oil

Here is a cut and paste email that I received from a dealer about the use of Cj4 oil (low ash). It lists all of the Duramax / Isuzu model and years that require the use of this "expensive oil".

I paid a lot for the first change and they later started doing my oil changes for around $80 for the "low ash" stuff.

To answer your question.........
NO EXPENSIVE CJ4 OIL NEEDED FOR THAT LLY!

A very misinformed service writer......(whats new) If you and I know this stuff or can come on line and learn this stuff??? Why can't they?

Apologize for the long strung out cut and paste. If you want the email PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. As it was a cut and paste from the web into the body of an email.

Duramax and Isuzu engines are factory filled with high quality engine oil when they are built. This oil has an API service rating of CJ-4 and Low Ash intended for Diesel Particulate Filtration (DPF) systems. For these vehicles equipped with DPF systems, Isuzu recommends engine oil that supports DPF (Low Ash Oil) and API service rating of CJ-4 be used when performing scheduled maintenance or repairs.

Refer to the Owner Manual for oil viscosity recommendations.

Notice: If you do not use this recommended oil in Duramax and Isuzu vehicles fitted with DPF, both the engine and the DPF may break down and fuel economy may decrease. Therefore, be sure to use the recommended oil type.

There's nothing "expensive" or "special" about CJ class oil. It is the new standard. As soon as the emissions hit the streets for the 08 model diesel engines, the oil was already on the shelves. All of the oil companies are complying with the new spec.

When my supplier went from CI to CJ the price went from about $1.25 to about $2.30 a quart. That is almost a 100% increase.
To me, that's expensive!!!

All that and you get a poorer quality oil for twice the price.

The gallon jugs barely raised in price when the CJ spec hit the market. Maybe a $1 a gallon if I recall correctly. The price of a barrel of oil is what has driven oil prices up. A year ago, Shell Rotella 15w-40 could be bought for about $8.89 a gal. In late 2005 I was buying gal jugs of Rotella for $6.88 a gal.

Yep. New blend, more money, inferior product. I'm sticking with Amsoil's 15w-40 CI rating.

Fact of the matter is low ash oil has been around for at least 30 years and was recomended in many detroit diesel engines as well as gas engines. The higher ash content in other oil was to nulify the diesel that would get into the crankcase on the older diesel lower pressure injectors that did not burn as clean. we now run rail pressure at higher rates than the old injectors cracked at

If there was nothing special about the CJ4 low ash oil then I wouldn't "have to" use it.

If there was nothing expensive about the CJ4 low ash oil then oil changes wouldn't cost nearly "twice as much".

Its great that you are sticking with the CI "stuff" but, some of us can't!
