Hey All!
We live just northeast of Dallas and will soon be going to Lost Maples State Park for the first time. Has anyone camped half way to our destination and does anyone have recommendations of what to do in the area?
Thanks

Doesn't answer your question but, if you're going to Lost Maples, go in March or April and look up our friends, Les & Jane Hall, who volunteer there leading bird watching walks. If you have any interest in birds at all, you won't be disappointed.

We went to Lost Maples 2 weeks ago today. The campground itself is small (30 spots), and was in good shape. The grounds had been recently mowed, although there wasn't much "green" due to our lack of rainfall. There are a number of trails for hiking - anywhere from a mile and a half to 5 or so miles if I remember correctly. Not much else in the area. We took 3 almost five year olds on the shortest of the trails a couple of times and they did fine. Not sure if you have been to the area before, but there are some STEEP hills getting there and back.
Sorry I can't help you with a stopping spot on the way.

I can't help you with a half way stop, but it's only a half day drive there anyway. In the area, the little town of Utopia used to have a very good little cafe in an old general store building. In Medina don't fail to stop at Love's orchard and have some apple pie. Bandera is an interesting little town with a difinite "old west" feel. Then of course there's always Kerrville and Fredricksburg not too far away.

McKinney Falls SP is on the way, not far off I35 just south of Austin. Lost Maples is great for hiking, but have good ankle support for those loose rocks on the steep hills. You'd probably see more fall colors in East Texas than in Lost Maples this year, but the park is plenty beautiful regardless of the foliage. It is well worth the drive if you like the natural beauty of the Hill Country, and isolation from development.

If you travel I35 you could try Belton RV park in Belton, Right on 35 but if you travel st 281 you might want to try Boone RV park in Lampasas. Stay on one or the other when we visit granddaugther in Killeen.

Lost Maples is beautiful and one of our favorite parks in Texas. If you could tell us your route - if you have one planned it would help. All of the parks mentioned so far are great!
