We looked at the maps on John's blog. We have found some much better maps. Maybe John has also but cannot post them?
Some of the following information may be for the more computer literate and/or those with some understanding of the Spanish language as most of what is on these web pages is in Spanish.
The following links all come from the Mexican Gobierno (government) website of the Secretaria De Comunicaciones Y Transportes (Secretary of Communications and Transportation) or SCT. They publish maps and other information regarding the roads of Mexico. http://www.sct.gob.mx
You can purchase most/all of these maps if you are interested.
Some of these maps can be downloaded as .pdf files. Most of the maps at full size are about 3 feet by 4 feet – like a standard road map that is folded/unfolded.
There are statements on the website that it is against the law to copy or print these maps. The maps are locked so you cannot print them directly. You can download them and use them in your computer. There is a way to print them below.
You can zoom in and out and move all around the maps if you are experienced with using .pdf files.
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=440 scroll down this page for individual maps of Mexico states in .pdf format – you can download these file – maps are about 3 feet by 4 feet if purchased or printed in full size. These are the best maps of Mexico we have been able to find. All 31 states. You can us Gadwin Print Screen (below) to print sections of these maps – very useful.
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/fileadmin/Atlas/turis2008.pdf Map of all Mexico with mileage chart in kilometers and miles as well as distance above sea level in meters and feet. Buy at > http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=511
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=513 Buy large atlas of Mexico – two versions – two prices – one has spiral binding – details at link.
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=512 Mini atlas of Mexico – details at link.
http://aplicaciones4.sct.gob.mx/sibuac_internet/ControllerUI?action=cmdEscogeRuta This is an interactive calculator to determine miles as well as toll costs for various routes in Mexico. At this webpage you can scroll to a state and then a city – pick start and finish location to find mileage from point to point – it will show an approximate route – you can also get an idea of where the tolls are and how much you might have to pay at each one – see autobus for motorhomes – if you have a toad you will have to add both autobuses and automoviles
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=442 This will take you to a webpage with some route maps of various routes you might take in Mexico. Most are to/from Mexico City - use either way. They download as .pdf files and can be printed. They show point to point distances along the route with approximate travel times, distances, and location of tolls. May or may not be useful.
http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen This is a link to a program you can use to save or print things from your computer screen that you cannot otherwise do – the PrintScreen 4.3 is free and does everything we have needed so far. You can select exact sections of the screen so you do not have to print the whole screen.
For any and all traveling in Mexico we find the new 2009 Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS (you can buy with or without GPS receiver) is greatly improved over previous versions. Don’t leave home without it.

We have a tripod system from Dustyfoot on Hughes sat 117 called SatMx5. We've used it as far south as the Guatemala/Honduras border and all over Guatemala, Belize and Mexico north of that.
You do have to be on SatMx5 if you are going all the way south, I think SatMx6 loses signal around Veracruz. I don't think any others work more than a short distance south of the US border.
The best info on satellite internet is found on the Datastorm Users forum, it was originally a forum for automatic Datastorm units but has expanded to include those of us with tripod systems as well. Very knowledgeable people.
