the connectors are probably tin covered copper connectors,i would solder them and use shrink tubeing on each wire then tape them all up then use shrink tubeing on the whole cable over the spliced connection,i would have just replaced the plug.

Walmart sells a good looking plug with a pull grip on it. Anyone used that one for a repair??????? Seems like its reasonable, about $20 bucks. Bright yellow in color.

That is one way.. Personally I'd have purchased a Camco POWER PULL plug from the same store you bought that from.. I really like those Camco Plugs

this is what i did buy and it is on there now but my problem with them are that the wire is so thick and even after twisting the wire and than wrapping it around the terminal as soon as i start to tighten the screw down the strands of wire start to get squeezed out of the screw area and i feel that it is not getting a good connection. it has been woking since we are living in it for the winter but i just figured this would be a better connection.

You need to solder the wires.

Those butt splice yellow connectors look like the ones made for automotive use and I would question the insulation on them being rated for 120 volts and if you use a squeeze tool to crimp I think you will find the yellow plastic will be even more compromised for house voltage. If you do use them individually tape or heat shrink each one after you crimp them and then cover the entire spliced area. As the connector is sized for the wire, they should be rated for the amperage of the conductor if crimped properly. Good luck.

If you really want a splice, here is the link showing several ways how to do it.

http://workmanship.nasa.gov/lib/insp/2%20books/links/sections/407%20Splices.html

The lash splice or western union/lineman splice both with crimped strain relief would be preferred in your case. Just changing the end connection would be a lot simpler as others have suggested.

My guess would be that the wires will get hot due to the resistance of the butt splice connector. The metal in the butt splice has much less mass than the #10 wire in the cord.

I would recommend just replacing the male plug as others have suggested. To keep the wires from fraying when rewiring the plug "tin" the ends of the wires with solder.

Like Dutch_12078 and some other say, I replaced my plug on my 50 amp about a year ago and have not had any problems. The installation was separating at the plug. Also like the handle on the yellow plug, easier to grip.

Happy RVing
