I am planing towing a camper trailer or a 5th wheel with my 5.7L Tundra and wonder if anyone has had experience doing this. Obviously it will be a smallish trailer, max unladen around 8000lbs. I will be traveling for the next couple of years and hope to see most of the country including Alaska. I live in Hawaii at the moment. I could do with any advice you may have.

I love the truck. Pulls my trailer very well through the northern Arizona Mountains. I tend to tow between 60 and 65 mph and get between 8 to 10 mpg. My biggest complaint about the truck...small gas tank. You may need to carry extra fuel if planning very remote journeys.

Good travels. We have a 5.7 L Tundra 2007 with over 40000 miles, pulling a 29 foot Cougar; about 9000 pounds. Great TV!
Enjoy

I would get a bigger truck if the weight will be 8K LBS unloaded. Too many variables there...hills, wind, trailer weight, length, all that sort of stuff. I tow maybe 6,500 lbs max loaded on occasion and unless the hills or wind did not exist, then ya..the Tundra doesn't even know it's back there. But for the few times I have been in some windy weather, I would want a bigger truck. Don't get me wrong, it was OK in those conditions, but just that...OK. 8K LBS or more would be too much IMO.

The Tundra (depending on the year and model) can be a very good tow vehicle for a travel trailer but not NEAR enough payload for a 5th wheel with a UVW of 8,000 lb. As a matter of fact if you have a UVW ofl 8,000 lb. you probably ALSO have too much travel trailer since any weight of passengers, cargo or optional equipment on the truck will reduce the tow rating and must be compensated for. If you tow a 9,000 lb. (loaded weight and that is loaded very lightly) 5th wheel you are looking at a pin weight of over 2,000 lb. and that ALONE is more than your trucks payload capacity. Look for a MUCH smaller 5th wheel and be CAUTIOUS about tongue weight for a travel trailer of that size as they can also put you over your payload capacity. Good luck / Skip

I have a 5.7 2008 4 wheel drive. You are very limited in towing a fifth wheel due to the pin weight. If you are looking at a full size fifth wheel you need at least a 2500 and probably a deisel. An 8000 lb trailer is pushing it but you truck should tow 10,300. Good luck

#8000 unladen is hardly a smallish size trailer... And towing a 5er, especially of that size, will surely overload your truck on GVWR and most likely rear axle rating as well...
If your going for that size 5er, your gonna need a larger truck... If it's a conventional TT you'll be creeping up on, if not exceeding, the GVWR and possibly GCWR of your tow vehicle...
Run your number s very carefully if your thinking of a TT of that size and weight...

What do you mean by "max" unladen?
What is the GVWR of the TT you're interested in?

We tow a 7800 pound Jayflight G2. With the weight distributed evenly and I try to keep the total weight of the TT with all our stuff under 9000 pounds. How do I know this? I weighed it. Tows like a champ. No problems. Just make sure your weight is distributed nice and even all up and down your rig.
