Here Chrysler finally jumps on the electric vehicle bandwagon, just as many Britons are passing on the electrics instead choosing efficient diesel alternatives. Fly over to the UK and what will you see on the roads, nary a electric, gas/electric or even a diesel/electric but instead a turbocharged, efficient direct injected diesel. Soot free, clean burning, 50+mpg Fords, Hondas running on the roads. A Jeep Wrangler electric?? You got to be kidding me. It even sounds foolish. As a Jeep lover and many times over owner of Jeeps(J-10s, J-20s, CJs, Cherokees, Wranglers), the last thing I want is a battery powered Jeep. I buy the Jeep to travel far off the beaten path, the last place an electric should be. Come on Chrysler for goodness sake, wake up!!!! Give us a small 4-banger torquey turbocharged emission compliant(hell I would be happy to piss in the Urea tank if needed) diesel that would deliver me 25mpg highway and endless fun far offroad. You can do it, pull a diesel off of the MB parts pin and stick it under the hood. If available I will be the first SOB standing in line at Addams Jeep in Annapolis with check book in hand.

And another basher has joined the party. Can't post anything positive around here with some yahoo turning it into a bash fest.
To those who enjoyed the article it was my pleasure to provide it. I found it very interesting as an alternative to gas or diesel fossil fuel reliance. Again I am in no way saying electric vehicles are a cure all, but for many folks they make a lot of sense.
So far, it's a very interesting reading. Two things cross my mind:
- where you all think the electricity will be coming from? Right, you might say: just plug it into the wall outlet.
- where would I take an electric Jeep for a ride? Perhaps to drive-in theatre, but not to where Jeep belongs, which is off-road.
The main thing is though that Chrysler is coming with another hocus-pocus formula. It takes years of planning, research, development and testing to come out with another car, never mind new technology propelled car. Thank you very much, but I'll stick to my Toyota for a while yet.
Even, of course, if they manage to survive through the next few months.
At the present, I worry about life of my extended service and oil change contract for my 2006 Ram truck that supposed to be good for another 2.5 years. I wonder..

Those other Countries Governments aren't run by tree hugger environmentalist either. Those other countries also pay 3X what we do for their fuel do in part to their smaller usage.
Myself, I would love to see this Country go in a different direction. With the amount of taxes all levels of Government collect from fuel I don't think they want us to cut our usage.
Electric, bio diesel, Hydrogen fuel, or any combination would be a step in the right direction IMO.

I am all for an electric vehicle. I want one. Probably too pricey the first couple years for me. Just a commuter with 500 to 750 cc motor to charge batteries or power direct with no transmission would be great. It will be interesting how the different technology systems will play out.
To really make the electrics work we need new home electric meters to give a discount for charging at night. And possibly also require some parking spaces with recharging stations at larger shopping or employment areas.
I hope this pans out for the automakers, all of them.
Indeed it's nice to see them coming to the drawing board with something. I'm with Capt Skup and others in regards to an electric Jeep. Makes zero sence and will probably make zero dollars. On the other hand, an electric minivan might be just what the doctor ordered for much of America.
All of you electric bashers sound VERY old school to me. Give the technology a chance to mature and maybe displace our dependence on others.

Get out from under that rock and look around the world.
Dude, I hate electrics, but apparently many tree huggers like them. I am in favor of any alternative energy forms that will keep us driving around. But, it's time for me to crawl back "under that rock."
