Alaska is great - but I don't believe you need to enter a "lottery" to see its wildlife. I saw a Grizz wandering about this morning, thru a snowbank - just off the paved road about 5 miles south of Swan Lake, MT.

We saw a lot of them in Valdez in August. Over toward the oil storage area.

Go here: Princess Royal Island and see the Spirit Bear.

http://www.britishcolumbia.com/regions/towns/?townID=4014

You will see these bears:

Princess Royal Island is best known as being home to the legendary white Kermode Bear, Spirit Bear of the North Coast of British Columbia. These magnificent bears are not found anywhere else in the entire world.

The Kermode bear (Ursus americanus "kermodei") is a beautiful white bear that is only found in the rain forests of the north coast of British Columbia. The Kermode bear is not an albino, nor is it a polar bear, but rather a pale colour form of the black bear. There is a unique double recessive gene required by both parents in order to produce a white bear. While black bears are predominantly black, they also come in shades of brown, blonde, cinnamon, auburn, smoky grey, and white. Black bears may have offspring and siblings of varying colours

We saw one close to where you turn off the Cassiar Highway to Stewart and Hyder. Took a bunch of pictures with my old 35mm camera, and later found that the film had not taken up on the spool. I am sure that I will never see another one.

My house! Ha ha! We don't get any grizzlies in our neighbourhood, but we do get black bears, like this little guy, wandering around our cul-de-sac on a regular basis.

You can see lots of bears in BC and Alaska for free, but I have to say, I'd enter that lottery if I had the chance - the view of those grizzlies catching salmon is remarkable!

True bears are almost everywhere. Read where the bear population in North America is the highest its ever been! Nothing like seeming them catch Salmon next to you while you are fishing in Alaska.

Here in Hog Valley(Oklawaha RV Resort), Florida we saw four last week. Lost cub-

Quite a few bears hang around the Chilkoot River in Haines, AK in August when the pinks are running.

Always fun the 'fish' with.

Some photos are HERE.

If you go to Skagway, ask how to drive to Dyea(sp?), the ghost town that was once the start of the Chilkoot Trail. It's about a ten mile drive on a mostly gravel (but pretty decent) road around the northern end of the Inside Passage. When we were there in September of 2007 the salmon were still running on a creek leading to the Inside Passage, and we saw grizzlies fishing on 5 of our six trips up there.

There's a young couple who live just across the creek who raise sled dogs, and a lot of the passengers from the cruise ships take a trip there to learn about the dogs, so you could ask about that to get directions.
