Have been reading, from time to time, about the Hughes satellite internet systems and often hear that since they came out with the new residentual dishes - the system is becomming slower and bogged down more.

Have a family that came into the campground a couple days ago that have the Hughes Motosat on their roof and they also have a Linksys WiFi set up inside the coach.

They allow anyone around them to use the WiFi if within range and I am lucky enough to be one.

While I won't be able to use it long (they are leaving today) I have enjoyed it and found that the speed is very similar to my DSL at home.

I will make my mind up this winter, while traveling, but this experience has enlightened me. One thing I will do though - is exactly what these neighbors are doing. Set up the WiFi and leave it in the mode that my neighbors around wherever I am can use it too.

If I am blessed enough to be allowed to have one - why shouldn't I share it?

God Bless

Bill

Better hope you got honest neighbors. THAT'S why you should not share it.
Be aware.

Use the cg desk and modem (yeah...dialup) or use the cgs Wi-Fi...but have a good firewall and virus-checker.

I have that dish, but don't use the internet. It works great for direct T.V. Just hit the button, and goes up and stows by itself. It is a little slow doing this, takes from 5 to 10 minutes. But I have plenty of other things to do while setting up.

I had a NughesNet system for several years but have switched to Verizon Wireless. With both systems I often share my Internet connection through a wifi router. There is no reason why not to, with some caution. I keep it locked (password protected) and only give the logon key to people I have met and spoken to.

As you observed HughesNet is comparable in speed to DSL. Verizon is about the same.

"why shouldn't I share it?"

Because Hughes has a bandwidth limit of 250 to 350 MB in any 24 hour period depending on your plan. If you exceed that you will fall into a FAP condition (fair access policy). Once you are fapped Hughes will slow your service down to speeds slower than dial up for 24 hours.

A couple of operating system updates can put you over the limit. Streaming video can also put you over the limit in a hurry.

If you want to spend the big bucks on the sat. Internet you can have a hice big antenna for that nice big price, and the subscription fee isn't cheap either. However if you get a PC Air Card your Internet speed will be satisfactory. In major markets it will be high speed and in extended areas it will still be quite fast. It is available from most cell phone companies and is much easier and cheaper to use (and a whole lot smaller). We have the USB type Air Card from Verizon and could not be happier. It can be used while going down the road. Anywhere you have phone signal you have service. The upload/download amounts are limited, however, we have 5 GB per month and have never come close to using even 1/5 of it in a single month. We upload photos, send lots of email, surf and do message boards. Lots of RVers have gone to this compact, fast, easy system and given up on sat. Internet.

This is the exact reason we keep ours locked down, but will give out the key, AFTER talking to the folks and explaining what they can not do and still had one couple still watch movies all night until I got Fapped.

Some people never leave the interstate road system and don't realize there are many, many places in the US, that DO NOT have cell service. We go to many Forest service camp grounds where there is no cell service, we go to Mexico, where there is no American cell service, we work in remote areas of the west where there is NO cell service. That is the reason we spend the big bucks on the sat Internet and have a nice big antenna for that nice big price, and the subscription fee that isn't cheap. It's called necessity for access to the Internet in a lot of North America.

Ditto on Bob's -The Texan's- comments. Until I got a new modem for my DSL the speeds were about the same at 750K. This may be on the slow side of Hughes and with a new modem my DSL is now 2500K. There are still way too many place that do not have cell service to think you can run a business while RVing using a air card.
Bob, are still carrying your tripod?

Hi Bill, I have the Hughes Net Satellite on my MH and also have a wireless router. I would NOT recommend having your system set up so that anyone could use it. If you should get someone who wants to watch a movie on satellite it'll slow your system down to a crawl. I have from time to time let some of my good friends use my system but I make sure they don't abuse it. Bob

No, I upgraded to a Motosat shortly after talking to you the beginning of this year. I got a good used unit from Don Marr of Oregon RV Satellite and with installation, and the BOW setup it was $3400. Also, to dispel the myth that you must have a clear view to the SW for the dish to work, I am setting under 2 huge oak trees here at the DWs and the dish is looking up through the branches and leaves, with a signal strength of 76.
