It is hard to tell. They may shut down or just needed to break some contracts they have signed.
Propane prices vary from place to place. I found the cheapest to be at local farm co-ops. In Iowa, at my dealer, I paid $2.99/gal, in Colorado at a campground I paid $4.59/gal however in Kansas at a co-op I paid $1.50/gal.
Always ask about price before filling. Some places charge a flat rate for a propane cylinder regardless of whether it is completely empty or partially filled. I found out the hard way, getting ready for a trip I had my bottles topped off, the guy charged me the cost for full bottles!! Here in the RV park we spend the winter in Mesa, AZ, the propane guy that comes around with a huge truck does the same thing- he says he doesn't carry any scales to measure it, so he charges the price for a full bottle, regardless of the quantity.

There was one time the guy was filling my tank while we were passing through some small one stop light town when I noticed the price above the big pig.
I asked him if it was correct and when he told me it was, I said well you can stop filling right now then, I dont need propane that bad.
I learned to ask in advance now.
Years ago, a pal told me to drive the small towns to find the best propane prices from the independents. Boy was that bad advice. What a rip-off the "Mom and Pop" shops are. No wonder they beg for business at their prices!
I don't mind paying extra to keep mom and pop in business. Besides my experence has been alot faster at the mom and pops than the big boys.
You go to a truck stop, people don't move their vehicle after filling up, they lolly gag around in the store......no thanks.

I use the local U-Haul to refill my camper bottles since I go through roughly 4 gallons in a week, usually a tad more.
I'm currently trying to find out pricing information for the rental of a stationary 25-30 gallon tank and refill service from Suburban Propane. Hopefully, it will be cheaper than refilling the onboard tanks.
#30lber holds 7.5 gallons.
