Willy,

It's really a bad time to plan a trip there without a reservation. You'll be lucky to find a spot, even if some folks don't show up for their reservation---due to the economy. There aren't that many places
in the area. Maybe head north to Dallas or Galviston.

You should have no problems finding someplace to stay in the Corpus area. Check out www.portaransas.org or www.fishrockport.org for RV parks and things to do in the area.

Check out the U.S.S. Lexington (I hope I have the name correct). We also visited the aquarium.

Galveston is not Corpus and after Ike I don't even think you should consider Galveston. Dallas is big city and traffic is nightmare for motorhomes.

Whew! Having said all that I love Corpus. Think seafood; they have some of the best. The Texas State Aquarium is well worth a visit as is the Lexington aircraft carrier. There is dog race track if you feel like a little gambling. The downtown small boat harbor is always interesting if you like boats. And don't forget Mustang Island and Padre Island. There is national seashore park well worth a visit. Check with local visitor's center to add to list of things to see and do.

Willy;

Stop at a Texas welcome station (many larger RV Dealerships have this too) and pick up a 2008 or 2009 Texas RV Travel & Camping Guide.

This is a magazine that lists every site in Texas and it has great descriptions of each site as well as telephone #'s, hookups, facilities, etc.

Most of the Texas RV parks are TACO members (Texas Association of Campground Owners) and the Guide has a card which will give you a 10-15% discount at almost every camp.

This is absolutely better than any RV campground book that could be purchased (like Woodalls or Frolich, etc), except that it doesn't give a campground rating.

Log on to www.texascampgrounds.com here which is the online version of this printed guide. The online site will even allow you to make reservations at most sites. There are more than 15 RV parks listed in and around Corpus Christi.

Two parks I've stayed at in Corpus are Hatch RV park, very nice, right downtown, a few blocks from the waterfront, close to restaurants, Lexington, easy access to the highway to go out to Mustang Island or Port Aransas. I've also stayed at Puerto Del Sol RV park in the North Beach area, right on the water, but not quite as nice. Still close to restaurants, shopping, the Lexington, etc. There are also RV parks out on the island, typically up in the Port Aransas area. Great beaches, fishing, etc. and close enough to Corpus for shopping, restaurants, Lexingon, etc. Great city to visit, good time of year to do so... ENJOY! - Tony

I think the dog track closed down a couple years ago. But, there is the "Texas Treasure" a gambling ship that goes out into the gulf from Port Aransas. Check their web site.

Galveston has been mentioned in a couple of posts.

We frequent Galveston at least once a month since it is so close to home (100 mi). The last time we were there was two weeks ago and the devastation was still tremendous. You can't imagine such a beautiful and historical city being laid to waste as Galveston has been. There is a book just out that shows a lot of the destruction right after the storm. Call Galveston Historical Society. It is really tough on people like us who knew Galveston as it was, and now to see Galveston as it is.

Dellanera Park (where we normally stay)which is city owned is completely destroyed. The Galveston State Park is completely destroyed. The one RV park on the outskirts (about 10mi)is completely full up with service and repair people. There is one other park (small campers only) close to downtown but it was full up also.

Your options are to dry camp. The city tells us they have lifted the "no overnight parking" along the seawall for the time being. (Better check on that). We couldn't get in touch with a couple of the large shopping centers there.

Many of the businesses are still closed and/are not in existence any more (blown away), especially along the seawall.

Galveston is not a fun place right now, but it is definitely worth the trip. They need all of support they can get.

Goose Island SP is a beautiful area with moss hanging from large oak trees around 1 camp area or camp on the waters edge. Padre Island has a paved campground at the edge of the beach, both places we plan to return to since we enjoyed them so much.
