We're heading to Colorado this summer and I'd like to spend sometime in the Grand Mesa area. I've found numerous FS campgrounds but not too sure if we can fit in a 38ft motorhome. Sometimes it's more the navigating the park to get to the spot rather than the size of the spot. I found a few commericial campgrounds but there not listed in TL and can't find any reviews. Any recommendations?
Thing is that Grand Junction, Delta, Olathe, Paonia, Hotchkiss, and the like are a kind of a fur piece from up on top of the Grand Mesa. (From my parents' ranch in Paonia, it was a good hour or more to get up here.) Cedaredge is closer because it's kind of up on the side of the mountain.

Vega State Rec. Area is not to old, the trees are small so there would be no problem driving through and it's right on Vega Lake. It's a great place to camp, we can get a spot for our 35' MH, maybe a 38' one. The road is a paved 2 lane all the way but a little narrow in spots. You won't be at the top of Grand Mesa but it's a good start, just up the dirt road out of the campground.

We boondock when we head up there, so I haven't paid enough attention to the layouts of the NFS CG's. Here is a good description of the CG's up on the Mesa. Look under RV Information for each CG and you'll see if they describe the interior roads narrow or tight. Avoid those. Fred and Suzi do a pretty good job of describing the NFS campgrounds. (Remember that "average parking apron" size is just that, an average. Which means there will be some smaller and some larger. They're a lot more accurate than the recreation.gov reservation website.)
If it's spring or summer, bring LOTS of mosquito repellent.
There is a place on Grand Mesa where I have seen some bigger rigs, but I am not sure of the name of it, since it has been quite a few years. However, if you don't need to be ON the mountain, there is a park in Cedaredge which is pretty cool. I am not sure if it can accommodate your rig, but we had a friend who stayed there and loved it. Cedaredge is a really pretty little town, great golf course and easy access to the Mesa. I agree with the poster who said have LOTS of repellant. The mosquito population on a mountain with over 300 lakes is HUGE. But, what a grand (pun intended) place it is. Here is the link for the park in Cedaredge.
