We are currently spending the winter in Kino Bay. We have our FMT's but have decided to join a group going to the Copper Canyon so will need to get a vehicle permit.
I know it is different for US citizens as they show if they have clear title on their paperwork, but for Canadians we only have our vehicle registration which does not indicate if the title is clear or has a lien on it.
What paperwork will we need to obtain our vehicle permit? We do NOT have a loan on our vehicle, but my understanding is if you don't have clear title you need a permission letter from the lender saying it is okay to take the vehicle into Mexico. We don't have a way to prove our title, or then again maybe it doesn't matter for Cdn's??

Hi,
Crossed in Dec, all they wanted was the original Alberta registration and 1 copy, copy of owners DL and I think that was it(We own ours outright). Crossed with a couple that had leased their van and had both a letter from the leasing company and BC registration but they only took a copy of the registration. Best to have both if bringing a bank owned or leased car? Sorry can't be more help

Your registration is your proof of ownership and that is all you will need other than your DL. Make sure your insurance will cover you in Sinaloa and Chihuahua.

Yes, moisheh is correct. For Canadian all you need is proof of registration and your drivers license and like moisheh said, you will need additional Mexican insurance to travel out of Sonora. Safe travels

Thanks for the info. Also thanks for the heads up on the insurance. I hadn't thought of that so will check on that.

One thing that we haven't done in previous years when getting the vehicle permit is to have both sides of the vehicle registration photocopied. It wasn't a problem at the kiosk as the person photocopied the back using a copier in the kiosk.

They need a copy of the back of the registration as that's where the renewal stickers are located (at least on the Ontario registrations).
