I’m looking into a simple system (probably 40 – 50 watts to maintain the batteries when in storage). Any recommended sites for explaining the installation process? I’m most concerned about making electrical connection (i.e what is the right way to connect to the controller and to the batteries?), and how to mount the panels on the roof (I don’t want leaks after I’m done, and I don’t want the panel being blown off in Santa Ana winds).

If I decide not to tackle it myself – any recommended installers in So. Calif (preferably Inland Empire)?

I just installed 2 85 watt panels on my MH. Pretty easy, I even made my own mounts, but if I did it again I would probably buy them.
Santa Ana winds wouldn't be any worse than the wind you would have driving down the road at 70 mph.
Solatron in Victorville is a pretty good place for panels and installation.

If your rig is sitting in direct sunlight a 50 watt panel should keep up the battery.

They are easy to connect, and certainly a DIY project.

Here's a basic setup I put on my boat that's at a storage facility, with no power hookups: Basic Solar Setup.

I have also mounted solar panels on my roof at home. I had to slowly figure out things as I went. With such a popular topic, you'd think there would be lots of DIY websites showing the steps. I couldn't find much info, so I posted the various phases of my setup at this link.

I'm using Z-brackets to hold the 130 Watt Kyocera panel to the roof. This was designed to mount panels on RVs.

Here's the bracket in use on my home. Holding up nicely to rain/wind here in FL.

There are proper sealants at RV suppliers for the type of roof material you have on your RV. I'm using 100% silicone on my home roof.

I did this install myself. Bought: All hardware at Home Depot; Solar panels from a Scottsdale, AZ dealer; Fused disconnect from an electrical supply; Controller and Tri-metric meter from Backwoods Solar.
