I currently have an L-shaped sofa on the slide out and want to replace with a sofa-sleeper. Has anyone ever done it and does it leave the carpet in a mess from where the L was? Also, it has been suggested to purchase a regular household sleeper as opposed to one for RV. Has anyone ever done this?
Thank you

We are just about to replace the magic bed in our new (used) Class A, as the magic bed is quite worn--and it's too small for our daughter. We aren't sure which unit to buy just yet, but it looks pretty straightforward. We are also considering the replacement of the carpeting in the coach as well, as it's original (1997) and pretty worn in several places. Have you considered simply replacing that section of carpeting? It might be more of a can of worms that you want to get into, but worth a thought. I haven't gotten estimates for the job yet, so it might be more of a can of worms that we want to get into as well!

We replaced the original couch with one from Lazy Boy Stores. They have a wide variety of fabrics, colors, and sizes, and an excellent warranty. We bought the sleeper with the air bed; it was very comfortable to sleep on and was much more comfortable to sit on then the RV furniture. They have stores everywhere or you can shop online. We were very pleased and the price was much less that comparable products from Flexsteel. The only difference was that there was no place to install seat belts, but we never used them on the old one anyway.

We suggest you look at the selection of rv furniture at braddandhall.com.
Made-for-RV furniture can be just as nice and comfortable as stick house furniture yet built to disassemble for easy access into a rv and easy re-assembly once inside plus on a steel frame that is designed to bolt to the floor or chassis.
We replaced a jackknife with a very nice Flexsteel hide-a-bed with air/inner spring combo mattress. This sofa is just as comfy for sitting or sleeping as any stick house piece.
We hope it won't happen but in the event of a catastrophic highway accident you don't want furniture likely to fly around the rv interior so we feel safer with everything bolted down.
Carpet, laminate or vinyl flooring - rvs are so small inside that replacing flooring or most anything is a pretty DIY project.
We have a 97 Vacationer and change things inside often.

My answer is not a direct answer to your question but more of an FYI. The jacknife in the MH was very uncomfortable to sit on and only suitable for a midget or child to sleep on. We disassembled it and took it to the dump. Then we unbolted the sleeper bed and flipped it in place of the jacknife. Then bought a euro recliner and portable computer desk. The rest of the space is occupied by a dog crate.
Here are some issues we discovered during our redo. There will be deep depressions in the carpet that may or may never come out. There were also seatbelt mounting holes through the carpet into the subfloor. Filled them with white silicon and stuck some carpet fibers salvaged from an out of the way spot to cover everything. It was a good thing we planned on the flip because the carpet under the jackknife was poorly cut and would have been very hard to patch.
My main suggestion to you is to throughly look under the sofa for potential issues with carpet or cabinets. My biggest pain was mounting the sleeper to the slide. They must us tripple jointed midgets to get the drill and driver in there.
Good luck!

In our ALFA M/H we removed the leatheret sofa that was incredably uncomfortable as well as the recliner and replaced them with a double reclining (electric) love seat and a recliner chair covered with micro fiber. It is very comfortable and warm. Just make sure that what you are looking at has a metal frame so you can rebolt it to the floor. Had to remove the big window from the slide to remove and install every thing. Two of our boys came over and gave us a hand at it. Just backe the truck up to the side of the slide, removed the window, slide the couch and chair out and reversed with the new stuff. Mama is really happy now. We got our furniture from Recliner Land. Good luck on your indeaver.
