Last month while camping in Mississippi I saw a setup on a campfire that I just have to make/have. It consist of a 1-1 1/4 5ft pipe as the vertical pole. Off of that is a 3/4 or so that extends about 3 ft with an eye on it with a chain to hang your cast iron pot over the fire. Below that is another arm(adjustable)with a grate for grilling. What is really neat is they had at the top of the vertical shaft, an inverted 2" hitch ball with a solid 10-12" rod welded to top & bottom and slipped it into the top of the vertical as a driver. They would raise the ball up and use it as a driver to set-up the cooking rack. Anyone ever seen one of these and/or have any pics. I guess I should have gotten a better look or had a Kodak Moment. Thanks in advance for your replies. Steve A. Dagro

Sounds like you need to bust out the welder and some scrape pipe and get to work. That sounds home made or as we like to say CUSTOM.

If they are driving the pipe into the ground this could be an accident looking to happen. Do you know where the underground utilities are in a campground. For instance in Florida some places they are only 6 to 10" below ground.

There are countless homemade versions, (the one with the hitch ball), however, it's a common design. Here is one with a horseshoe instead of a hitch ball for the impact driver. These have a place to hang pots.

Good point. We do check all of that out 1st and even ask the park ranger/attendant prior to driving post. Steve

If the fire ring is over top of a water pipe that is only 6" in the ground that is a bigger problem than driving a stake into it. Same goes for electricity lines. We routinely have a fire for 8 hours, in 8 hours the heat from the fire would easily melt the insulation on the wires and a lot of water/sewer pipes at that depth
