At those levels you still need gages. The Pyro is the most expensive at arround $100+. The others arent as much but install will cost unless you do it yourself.

Go to dieselstop.com forum, those guys have a ton of info. (Warning it can get as addictive as RV.net). I only have a 40 HP tune and pulling 10,000# around just the moderate hills here can raise the EGT's very high even with a 4" exhaust. The guages and a pillar pod was less than $300 for good ones and they are fairly simple to install. You will really like the power and the throttle response is so much better. Hope this helps, Rick

Thanks Rick, all I need is another addictive forum like this one
I'm looking at DP tuner's web site and have sent them an email for some info. I might cancel the Bully Dog when it gets here tomorrow and get everything done once I get down there.

Also, could I get away with say a 40-50 setting without a gauge ???
I don't push my truck hard and never over 60 mph, just want a little something extra for the hills between OR and Redding.
With all the gauges I need the $600.00 chip looks like it is going to be the cheapest link in the chain.
For the best reading on an EGT gauge the gauge should be installed before the turbo. Should you install the probe after the turbo you should add 300 degrees to the temperature the gauge shows. The fear of metal shavings, and not wanting to remove the turbo is what has stopped me from adding the EGT gauge. Rode our 7.3 to 213,000 miles stock, and it ran good when we traded it in. Has been awhile since I looked at the EGT gauges so can't help you on the price. If you chose to have someone install this for you I would want to be sure they had a plan for the metal shavings from the drilling and tapping of the hole. Metal shavings hitting the turbo doesn't sound good to me.
2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. That puppy is a great big fuel / air pump... very small improvement to just dump more fuel in there, unless it can get out.. suggest you start with a larger exhaust system.. then the chip can really help.. knowing the exhaust temp coming to the turbo on a long steep pull, can be a lifesaver for the turbo blade...

I don't think this is always true with the new tuners available today. I opened up my exhaust to help with EGT's but with my tuner and mods I have increased MPG by over 30% and HP by close to +100. Now that's on a diesel.... I can't speak for a gasser. Pyro guage is crucial.... I was told to let engine idle while you drill and it would puff the shavings out... I went with a new manifold that had a place for the pyro predrilled. Don't know if they are available for a Ford.

If that were true I would think you'd have a hard time explaining how a chip took my empty mileage from the "16s" to the "18's" and increased the power enough to make ya sit up and notice. No additional smoke. The factory says 90 HP increase and my seat of the pants agrees with them. I can't do speed speed runs 'cuz I have the very slow shifting 6-spd. but the truck now handles my 9,500 lb TT like chump change. I do have a 4" exhaust, but only noticed a small difference. Also put on the FOMOCO Iraqi air filter. Somehow the cat fell off one night in the gloom of the foggy darkness. I had to put some exhaust so I found this turbo-back set of pipes in a box in my garage. Hey... they fit right on there! Must have been the exhaust fairy.
Here is what I did with my 7.3: Replaced the stock muffler with a Walker Big Truck muffler ($50 + installation); Replaced the stock air intake filter with a Ford Air Induction System (an authorized Ford upgrade) ($200); Installed an Edge Evolution tuner (comes with a pyrometer and can monitor about 10 different engine parameters) (less than $500). The tuner has 3 settings, but I only use the lowest one. I have been happy with this set-up and so far have not had any problems.
