As you may remember,I will be looking at purchasing a 5ver within 2 years.Narrowed down to 2 about the same thing. My ? is to the ford 250 guys with the v 10,I don't want to hear from the diesels, the chevys and dodge boys. What I would like to know is real, not fake but honest answers as to the mpg, what you tow with your 250 and honestly how it does.Do I go with I think the 4 10 or is it the 4 30 gears,if I am off the rearend ratios sorry and by all means correct me,I won't tell you the real weight of the 5ver,just a close call of 11,500 FULLY LOADED , not the dry weight. If I don't want the weight police here to come crawling out of the pages, just want honest answers to what you are pulling how the truck does.I have read alot of independent reviews of the 250 v10 and in all cases they performed just as good and the diesels, now diesel boys settle down i have nothing against you just don't want the exspense of it.I live in the midwest and its flat, flat and flat.We are in farm land so diesel prices are at least .50-.75 cent a gallon higher and it gets darn right cold in the winter.Like we had a spell of -31,my boss's diesel takes like a week even plugged in to get luke warm if it starts at all,I am set on the v10,sorry for the long thread just needed to hand pick my advice givers.THankyou for your input v10ers.

My V10 is a good puller. I pull a 11500 plus fully loaded fiver with no power issues and I have a 373 differential ratio in a 4X4. Pulled through the mountains and passed semi trucks on the grades. Gets poor to fair mileage in the 7 to 8 MPG towing. Mine is a 1999 F250 Superduty.

A lot depends on what year you are talking about. The earlier V-10s were the 2 valves per cylinder while later versions went to 3 valves. In 2000 the V-10 horsepower went to 305 from 265 and torque went from 410 to 420 ft lbs. In 2003 it raised again and in 2005 went to 355 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. For 2009 the engine is rated at 362-horsepower. So when you are talking about V-10 power it could range from 265 to 362 and torque from 410 to 457 ft.
I had an 2001 F-250 v-10 with a 3.73 rear and it pulled two different 5th wheels with no issues although I wasn't pulling in the mountains. It got between 8 and 9 mpg. I currently have an 2008 F-350 dulley, V-10, 4.10 rear. A much heavier truck pulling a heavier 5th and I still get between 8 and 9 mpg while towing and that includes some mountains. This leads me to believe that the newer V-10s even though they have almost 100 more HP and better torque are more efficient.

I am of course a couple years out on the trailer but just only a year out on the tv.I am looking at a 05 or higher, won't go new but at least a low milage 05,I have read the rear end ratio is different on the 05 and higher i think, might be wrong on that one.

I don't have a F-250 but a F-350 dually with the V-10. I get (all things being equal--no wind, hills, etc.) about 8 towing. The truck gets around 10 mpg in town (although it's not designed to run empty "around town") and in the 12's on the highway, empty. My fiver, fully loaded, weighs about 15,500 so I needed the 4:30 rear end. It took me about 6 months to decide between a diesel or gasser, I finally decided on the gasser--best decision I could have made.

I have a 2008 F-350 SRW Crew Cab with 4:30 gears towing a heavy Mobile Suites 5er. Trip computer told me I got 8.9 mpg towing from Toronto to Dunedin Florida. Not towing I am getting 15-16 mpg. highway.

We pulled a 13 K plus 5Th wheel all over the country with a 05 V-10, CC, LB, Dually 4:30 Diff. We strongly recommend the 4:30 diff. The truck pulled well and had plenty of power and torque under most conditions. I will be honest. On the steep grades out west and long hard pulls it regstered very high RPM's and did bog down but still pulled the grades, a bit slower but with no problem MPG pulling the 13K was in he 7/9 range with 7 being more common than 9. Solo which we did not do much of was 11/12 on the interstates or tpks and 7/9 in city traffic. Our home base is in Northern, Ohio so also flatlanders and IF you plan to do the majority of your towing/driving in your part of the country the V-10 should serve you well.

I have had three F250 Super Duty TV. Still have one at the present time. I tow a 34 ft TT, 10,000 pounds with very little problems. All three had the 3:73
Get 7 to 9 towing, up to 15 on the Freeway. Best gas eng that I have ever had {which is many} I do wish it had the 4:10 as it bogs down some in the mountains
I will be buying another V10 in the near future

I can't believe someone has not told you that you can't pull a MS with a SRW F-350. LOL

I had an 2000 F250 SRW V-10, 4:30, and was happy with the pulling power (11,000 pounds). On a 6 month trip we averaged 8 to 9 miles towing.I was less happy about the slowing down...there were some down hills that left a lot to be desired...the tranny just wouldn't slow it down enough to satisfy me.

For what it is worth, I have been a gas user all of my life. I recently switched to a 3500 Duramax w/Allison transmission and I'm never going back! The difference is night and day and the Allison will hold it back on the downhill! No more white knuckles and hot brakes!
