Question for Pontoon Boat owners. I'm looking at a used Pontoon and am wondering about the motor, an eighteen foot boat with a 48 horse motor. Trolling motor and boat engines are never big enough in some situations but is 48 horse power enough for this boat?

I'm glad to be here, but at my age I'm glad to be any where.

I don't own a toon, so take it for what its worth, it doesn't take much power to push them around. I would however check into the motor. 48HP, sounds like an old one, and I don't care for old outboards.

The Crest II 25 ft. pontoon boat I used to own had a Merc 50 on it, and got around our lake quite nicely with it.

Our 25' pontoon has a 40 hp Honda, and can pull a tube or a wakeboarder on a large board. And unless the pontoon has a sealed bottom, too much horsepower just gets wasted because the wake splashes up against the crossbeams and slows the boat.

Pontoons don't require much HP for cruising. I have a 24' w. a 75HP which is more than I need, but when you are out on the lake with a storm approaching, it's nice insurance to have. The only question I would have is the condition of that 48HP motor. It might be worthwhile to upgrade.

Our 18' Pontoon has a Honda 50 and is more than enough.

A 48 h/p would be plenty for a 18ft to a 24ft pontoon boat.Ofcourse I like the bigger pontoons,24in to 30in.They make the boat set higher and or much better than the older pontoons.

what altitude will you be using your boat? (figure 3-4% power loss for every 1000 ft above sea level)
I use my crestliner 23 ft pontoon with a 115 hp honda on water between 4500 to 6500 ft above sea level.
I can make 28 mph with a lite load (1 or 2 people ) and about 18 mph with full load (8-10 people and pulling 2 more on a tube)
I was warned by the salesman not to purchase the 50 hp model, and boy am I glad I listened. now I wish I had about 50 more horses.

p.s. off topic, but whenever I see someone post about having plenty of power, be it outboard, pickup truck, generator, etc., my first thought is that they must be a flatlander !

WTB, you must be sharp one, yep, Kansas is about as flat as it gets. As for the poster who said 48 horse is older motor, i think he is right, I beleive it is a 1988 model Johnson. Only going to use this one to Crappie fish as I have a Champion bass boat. Dealer does not have any newer model engines on hand but would like to update to newer engine
