I am in the market for a used 06-07 Ford F150 or 06-07 Dodge Ram 1500 and wanted to know what people thought would be a better tow vehicle.

Ford F150 super or crew cab 4x4 V8
Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 with 20' wheels V8

I tow a 2000 Jayco KIWI 21C that has a dry wieght of approx 3500 pounds. I plan on upgrading (within the tow rating of F150 or Ram 1500) campers later on (not for another 5 years)and would like to not have to upgrade trucks.

Beside the tow rating the axle ratio is the key to having power where you need it. 4.10/4.30/4.56 ratios will just wake up the tow ability to pull right at the max rating. I say nix the Dodge,Ford is superior dependability & the 5.4 24 valve engine with a Hypertec tuner will be plenty of power. Buy the most GVW you can get in the F150. Factory Order a new truck equipped to do the job,not just buy from stock. Axle ratios become about 30% higher when in OD. look up "Skip & Char" posts in the "tow vehicles" for a first hand look at Ford dependability when used towing heavy .Good luck

This is false, the Hemi, or 4.7 and 545rfe combo are second to none in dependability. Don't know where this guy pulled that info out of. The Ford v8 offerings are very dependable as well, if perhaps a bit less powerful.

Back to the OP, it all depends upon which v8 engine and what gear ratios the trucks have as to which will be a better puller. The 20" rims on the Dodge will knock about 1000 lbs off the towing capacity versus the same truck with 17" rims. We need more info to make a good suggestion.

I don't think it will make much difference with the TT you are considering.

It is my opinion that both rigs will do the job of towing that TT (more than just do the job actually). A side by side performance comparison between the two trucks, with that TT, may not show you much.

And I am a Ford man.

A friend of mine had a 2005 Dodge 1500/Hemi with a 3.55 axle, and when his lease was up, he turned in the Dodge and got a new Ford F150 with the 5.4L and a 3.73 axle. He has no complaints with either, but did mention that the Dodge had "way more power" in his words.

Make sure you get the 3.73 (Ford) or 3.92 (Dodge) rear axle ratio for the best towing performance.

Also the Dodge will have a 5 speed auto when the Ford auto is a 4 speed.

Both will be great trucks.

Keep in mind that when equipped with the 20" wheels, the Dodge's tow rating is reduced by 1000#.

I just turned 101k miles on my inferior Hemi powered Dodge. I've replaced the condenser cooling fan motor and a thermostat. Last week I had a 4.56 ratio ring and pinion installed to bring my towing rpm down some. Still runs like a new truck. All of the gas powered pickup offerings are virtually trouble free with few or no issues, flashes or other concerns to worry about. The one you like better is the one you should go for. That's what I did.
