You should read the following article in regards to the kidnappings in Phoenix. It states that there hasn't been a "real" kidnapping in Phoenix for a long time. The kidnappings are tied to illegal immigrants, drug control among them, etc. The "Mexican" problem just crossed the border, however the authorities have cut into this a lot the past year. Just FYI.

Yes I have... extensively... I'm DONE.
I would LIKE to travel there again... but I just don't see them cleaning up their act enough to make it safe.... but I do pay attention.
All of us that travel and spend a lot of time in Mexico pay attention, believe me. The thing is, all the hullabaloo is right at the borders with an occasional short flare up in the interior. Not one person of the more than 10000 traveling in Mexico this winter, or the 1.2 million expats that live in Mexico have reported any violence against them or even around them, so where is all this problem that the State Department is reporting transpiring, right at the border and you are past the border within 20 minutes of crossing into Mexico. Why doesn't the state Department issue travel advisories for Phoenix, Detroit, Washington DC or even Canada, where there have been many problems with the drug cartels and murders, kidnappings, etc. Believe me when I say that all of us that need this information know what the truth is and the State department does not come close to providing that.

I always wonder what the point of these threads is. It's safe to assume they'd be more substantive if they only included people who were interested in RVing below the border.

This brings up an interesting issue. The Internet provides a tool for unprecedented numbers of people to report their experiences, and we see it in action in Mexico during major events like major storms, and with the hundreds or thousands of blogs on the everyday activities of ex-Pat Norte Americanos and tourists. There doesn't seem to be much awareness among bashers that the audience here is already largely networked and savvy.
Re comments on "the mexican problem moved south of the border". Have to disagree with this one. This is a society problem of North America. The demand for the product is from Canada and the USA. The suppliers are from south and central america as well as Mexico in North America. If there was no demand there would be no problem, therefore this is primarily a Canadian and American problem that is spilling into Mexico. Mexico is working hard on their part. We need to do better on ours. Education, after school programs. Stiffer prison sentences for convictions of traffickers etc. I see more effort on prevention in Mexico in the form of ads, slogans etc than I do in Canada or the US. Are we stupid. Can we not figure out the chain of events.
Be scared, be very scared. You will almost surely be shot as you sleep in your RV. The only good thing about it is the fact you don't have to make reservations this year.
Go somewhere safe instead, like Williams Lake, BC, Canada

You probably will never travel to Mexico because SAFE is in the eye of the beholder, and you don't think it's SAFE enough for YOU.
One man will climb up on his m.h. and fix the AC, another will consider that to be UNSAFE. One man will take his boat to sea, another will never leave the shore. Some people CAN'T EVEN FLY, because it's so unsafe.
"Irrational fear" is the culprit. Some have more of it than others. Statistically you are as SAFE traveling in Mexico as you are in the US unless you are a police officer dealing with the narco-mafia or you are transporting contraband or engaged in other illegal activities.
Mexico can only clean up "their" problem so much, after that it's our problem.
