Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. I called around to the places suggested and of course everything is booked. Looks like we are going to go to LB the following weekend instead. I'll definitely keep these places in mind for other times though. How strange that there is availability everywhere after the weekend of the 4th.

One of the reasons we STAY HOME during the holidays - WAY too many people!

I know of one place that you can stay, but it is in Temecula and you said it was to far. OutDoor Resorts at Rancho California. One of the best campgrounds you can stay at in the Area. We stayed there on the 4th of July, it is very hot, but they have 5 swimming pools, a golf course, tennis courts, lake and on the holiday they cook for everyone in the park, free drinks, 50's style band, golf cart parade and much more. Check out there website: outdoor-resorts.com (951) 767-4579

We plan to be in SO CA in early June. Want to be within an hour or two of Thousand Oaks, near my son, although we've also talked about Paso Robles. Do we need to make reservations way in advance? We're doing the 'round the country trip from FL and are trying to avoid committing way in advance. Any input is appreciated.

I would book the SoCal locations, only because the campgrounds are few and they fill fast. Paso Robles: I would recommend Wine Country RV Resort. Just off the highway within walking distance of a very nice winery and an hour drive to Hearst Castle and beach.

Early June you might be okay because school isn't out just yet. However, anytime after the 2nd week of June needs to be reserved mainly because if it's not already full, it will be soon. So Cal tends to book up in advance especially during the summer months.

Wine Country Resort is a great place. Paso Robles is beautiful and I highly recommend it. Great place to see the central coast area - hearst castle, elephant seal colony, morro bay, Cambria - all a short drive away. LOTS of wineries to see - Our favorite is Penman Springs, Tobin James winery (both in Paso) and Harmony Vineyards (just south of Cambria on highway 1).

Either way enjoy.

Paso Robles is more than 2 hours from Thousand Oaks. it's an hour just to Santa Barbara. it's about 3 and a half hours driving time.
