Good Sam and C2C does this also. They send a renewel notice out months ahead of the actual renewal date. Again, as with most things, it is buyer beware.
Bad, but one of the ways that business is done these days. And then they wonder why they lose business/ customers.
My Brother has the best ARRP renewal story. Following advice from friends, not listening to me, he join ARRP and then joined their Medical Coverage. Fast forward to his Heart Attack that required by-pass surgery. While in the Hospital at deaths door he was advised that ARRP had denied his claim and my brother now owed the Hospital $33,000 a day for two days. Plus he would have to pay for the scheduled surgery.
Brother transferred to a Hospital in Bajha Mexico for the surgery because he could not afford it in an American Hospital.
Now the funny part. He still gets notices from ARRP informing him that he is a valued customer who has not sent in his renewal payments, that he is in arrears several months. This follows several phone calls, letters, etc from my brother trying to get reimbursement for the surgery which is still denied.

do you have any details as to exactly why his claim was denied? I can think of many legitimate ones, such as if he had had a prior heart issue and didn't disclose that in his application.
I think it is grossly unfair to just give one side of the story.

We have. However, we have all of our bills (including annual--or longer--renewals such as AARP) are set up in Quicken's Scheduled Transaction List, so we know when all of our bills are due. If I receive a renewal notice before the renewal date, I just ignore it.
Although the super-early renewal notices from AARP and Good Sam are annoying, they're certainly not sufficient to make me drop my memberships; I just ignore them until the final month before they're due.
I went through GS's online request to stop the extra mailings, and now all I get is about one piece a month, usually about medical insurance (that I have no need for).
BTW, AARP membership is open to anybody age 50 or over.
Its not just them. Watch out for McAfee. I had McAfee security on my PC. They sent me a renewal notice which I paid. I had a problem, I contacted them and in the course of discussing my problem I found out that I had already paid for the year. So I had paid twice. I ended up cancelling my subscription with them because of the problems and they REFUSED to refund me the double payment. I will never deal with them again.
