Traveling by train is an adventure; I have been fortunate to take many trips by train. I remember, as a child, traveling for days, sleeping in a cabin and eating in the dining car. Traveling in a mh is similar to train travel.
I don't know if this could classify as a spectacular trip or not, but it was most memorable. It was from Dallas, Texas to San Diego, California in 1945 along with about 250 others enroute to Navy Boot Camp. This was in the days before air conditioning and I can still remember the hot dusty ride (this was in early summer). If you opened the windows, cinders blew in all over everything. We detoured over a part of Mexico and of course we could not get off. I can't remember riding a train after that..

When I was a child, I commuted by train (NY,NH,& H) to school for several years.
My grandmother used to travel to school and later to meet with my future Grandfather on the Durango & Silverton narrow gage. Also she rode the now called Cumbres & Toltec from Chama, NM to Antonito, Co. Both of these narrow gage tourist trains have been lovingly restored and offer exquisite scenery, & are very memorable day trips. Alamosa, Co now offers a slightly more modern train that will either meet with the Antonito train or do a round trip to LaVita, Co through some of the most spectacular southern Co. scenery you have ever seen. I ride them whenever I can spare the time!
It seems you recall well the old days before Amtrak. Empire Builder ran westbound, the Western Star ran eastbound on the Great Northern at that time. They even used to stop at my little town of Ray, North Dakota, where my dad and I would get on for the trip to Minneapolis.
I had to go to clinic there for special allergy treatments when young. What an adventure for an 8 year old. Never forget those train rides. (of course, to be perfectly honest, I did before your post- a mind is a terrible thing to waste )
My most memorable.. Summer 1962 a 4 Day trip from San Antonio, TX to Rantoul, Il. For some reason known only to the USAF travel agents I was given a private compartment.

I sure think it does. Incredible scenery. Also back in the early sixties, my grandmother took me from Rifle,CO to Denver on the California Zepher. We returned by catching a ride on a potash truck back to Meeker, CO. Some trip, and my DGM was some kind of old lady.
