The ECT sort of acts as a choke. When the engine is cold, it sends inputs into the ECM and that interns adjusts the amount of fuel delivered to the engine.

Question: What does an ECT have to do with 02 codes?
I'm only asking because I don't know.
thanks
The sensor itself is (not) serviceable that I know of, when you pull the old one out you will see that the element is encased in brass housing which is the body of the sensor.
There are 2 sensors, one for the Computer and one for the Guage, be sure to ask for the one (for the computer) if they ask you to specify when you order the part.
Well, I took the truck in to get a smog test--it failed! The tech said it's dumping way too much fuel in at idle! what do I do now? He said it was a possible misfire? I replaced my plugs a couple months ago, when it was misfiring and that took care of that problem.
I tried to help with the last episode you had. I had a 98 dually with the 7.4 and I had two fuel regulators leak fuel into the vacuum line causing your type of problemsm but others said that no they dont leak only the small motors do that. CHECK THE VACUUM LINE FOR FUEL INTRUSION OVER AN HOURS TIME. Best of all no meters, no scan tools, and best of all its free.
I did replace the ECT and went to have the truck smogged, it didn't pass. It did help a little by what the results said. It's still dumping to much fuel at idle! missed passing by 17 points!! He even ran it on a manual to help me. The tech tried to help me by turning up my idle to 975rpm. It passes fine at 2500rpm He said it could be possible the o2 sensors aren't switching. how do i check for that? My o2 sensors are new as of a few months ago.
