I put in a thread a long time ago here about my front suspension on my 05 2500 Ram, making a loud metalic rubbing sound when making a full steering wheel lock turn over a bump or driveway entrance.

When the steering wheel is turned all the way, and just going slowly through a turn into a driveway or crossing a speed bump, the front end emits a rather loud noise, which I phonetically describe as a "Squank!".

I took it to Dodge back when the truck was new, and they said that some front suspension component needed some greasing and that it was nothing to be alarmed about. Seemed like it was quieted-down after that visit, but not for very long. I've lived with that noise for the last few years. It seems to be when the truck's suspension does a fairly deep rebound or dip.

Anyone else have this with their IFS front end?

Off topic question, but here's what I get for fuel mileage.

At a steady 55 MPH, on a level road, with no appreciable headwind, pulling my TT that is close to 10k lbs., I get a little over 15 MPG.!

At the same speed not towing, unloaded, and same road conditions I get 23-24 mpg.!

One particular addition to my TV that seemed to up the fuel mileage a little was adding a bed height, hard tonneau storage cover. My only thoughts on why it helps is that there is no swirling air in an open bed box, and there is less frictional surface area for the air to pass over. The only possible obstruction is the front of the TT ramming into the air.

Also, maintaining a speed of around 55 MPH. and using the cruise control to keep the speed fairly steady has helped appreciably.

I know a lot of those 12 valve owners will shake your heads at my fuel mileage as "pie in the sky", but it's absolutely true.

The biggest condition is speed. I faithfully hold down my cruising speed and live in the right-most lane of the freeway/turnpike/interstate.

At first it was hard being passed by just about everything but a few semi's, but it's money in the bank, and my Cummins is barely turning over any rpm's. The torque band is low, and even in Tow/Haul the tranny wants to stay in overdrive unless we hit a bit of a grade.

It is most likely the steering stop rubbing as the suspension moves over the bump. Some grease will quiet the scrape.

You do know. You are not supposed to turn a powersteering vehicle to full lock. It puts too much pressure on the pump, and most will make a noise evey time. You manual in all likely hood warns against it. Mine does. So if you do. Back off just a smidge.

When I say full lock, I mean I'm making a tight turn. I do realize that you'll get a nice little noise out of some power steering units when you lock the wheel all the way over. I try, never to lock the steering wheel while turning.

This sound I'm talking about is in the suspension. It makes this loud rubbing noise when the suspension is rebounding when the tires are turned all the way left or right.

Also there is no evidence of the tires scrubbing the fender wells either. That was my first suspicion.

Check the track bar for loose ends, just a guess. With engine off, key on, get under the front and have somebody turn the steering wheel slightly. If the front axle moves as a whole, even just a hair, your track ends are worn out. Also just look over everything and look for sign of scraping or rubbing.
Your truck does not have IFS, it is a solid front axle on Dodge 2500 trucks.

Sounds like it`s the steering stops. when you turn the wheel to the stop it`s like a metal on metal noise. it`s more noticeable when the suspension moves. nothing to be concerend with. my old Dodge van used to make that noise when I would make a tight turn. there`s not much you can do to eliminate the noise other than back off on the steering when it makes it.

Your advise is identical to what I received from another website forum yesterday, when asking about this sound/problem. It was recommended to me to look for the rubbed metallic area at the "stops" and rub on some grease. That would stop that sound.

Actually, that's what Dodge did a couple years ago when I brought in my P.U. for that sound. They said they greased some area that was rubbing, but that nothing was in danger of damage, because of the noise.

Yep! all true! I`ve done the same thing on other trucks. it`s normal and nothing to be overly concerned with.
