We buy the cheap gas for our older car and suv as long as its not the E10.I found out that me ATV's,lawn mowers, and small engine yard tools work alot better on the high test gas.

I know here in San Diego most if not all gas comes from the same distribution center. If anyone knows San Diego, it's by the stadium. You can see everything from Shell trucks to Chevron to no-name gas trucks filling up, then head off to the stations.
So with that said, when and where do certain brands add there own additives?

No different than oil. A top brand oil manufacturer is thought of as the best OTC oil available. A small company buys their base stock from this company and blends a higher than safe amount of the same phosphorous in the oil and sells it to you through the mail for a much higher price and it's supposed to be far superior. But they give you a window sticker!
My truck seems to like Shell. Must be the additives. I like Chevron for the Techron cleaner. Now that Shell is putting nitrogen in their fuel, my truck starts better on other brands. Gas is gas but the additives will help keep your injectors and combustion chambers cleaner. Mobil runs good but boy is it more expensive around here. But what the heck. I gotta give my union wages back to the share holders in some form or another.

I am "buying in" to the additive and filter differences... based on what I am told by my company that just opened a new gas station.
Name brand fuel... either you believe the additives are good for your vehicle or you don't. If you do you go with brand name.
Gas stations... either you believe they have a better/newer/more effective fitler system or you don't.
Gas is volitile... meaning it is not stable. It can sit and deteriorate... or it can be quickly produced, transported to retail and consumed. Sales volume at any given station could be important at times... as could the age of the tanks and other factors.
We are all subject to variables we do not control. We do the best we can for our own needs and conditions. Buyer beware!
Stick with a top tier gasoline. Car and Driver usually reports annually which companies make top tier gasoline, which contains the best additive package. I believe Chevron, Texaco, Shell, Valero, and Conoco/Phillips66 are all top tier. In the bargain gas companies, QT is rated top tier, while Racetrack gas is some of the worst you can purchase. Several reports around Texas in the last few years about Racetrack gas ruining fuel injectors. There could be more top tier companies, but I cannot recall which ones. Believe it or not, Exxon/Mobil does not have top tier gasoline.
I have noticed a bit of a difference depending on what station I go to. BP and Citgo usually gives me about 3-4% less then stations like Sunoco, Hess, or the others.

Ethanol is supposed to burn cleaner. I hear a lot about non ethanol gas providing better mileage than ethanol gas, but I don't know for sure.
In my province all gasoline now has a percentage of ethanol, under 10 %. So, no option.
I use either Shell or a local around here...Co-op. I can't tell the difference in the survivability, starting (cold starting down to -35 to -40) or performance.

Ethanol is an oxygenation (sp?) agent... to help fuel burn more completely with less emmissions. It replaced MTBE several years ago for this purpose. Ethanol is not a toxin and breaks down quickly in nature. MTBE is an organic solvent that has polluted groundwater for years... from leaky gas tanks.
