Cheaha State Park is on the highest "mountain" in Alabama, all 2500 feet of it. Good hiking trails and mountain views. Near Anniston.

DeSoto State Park is in the northeast part of the state, near Ft. Payne.

Monte Sano SP in Huntsville.

Joe Wheeler SP near Florence.

Wind Creek State Park near Alexander City is on Lake Martin. Nice sites by the water. Lake Martin is a large (750 miles of shoreline) lake that was the largest manmade lake in the United States in 1929 when it was built. Good fishing (bass, croppie, bream, stripped bass)and skiing. We have been there twice'

We stayed at Lurleen Wallace SP and thought it was very nice. On a long dam lake with lots of pull throughs, paved, waterview spaces, boat rentals. Hilly, pretty with lots of nice bike riding.

We stay at Oak Mountain State Park quite a bit - it is only 10 miles from the house! It has two fishing lakes with swimmming spots, golf course, nature trails, horseback riding, lots of hiking trails. Located just off I-65 south of Birmingham in Pelham.

Monte Sano, Lake Guntersville, DeSoto. Take a look at the http://www.alapark.com/Camping/ website for more ideas.

Desoto has just completed major renovation making more sites and what they have larger.. Think it has just been completed but would call the ranger to be on the safe side. Oak Mtn is nice and has some high points although the campground is not on a mountain. Monte Sano is on top of the mountain in Huntsville so there are some that will accomodate the desired to be in the mountains.

We love NE Alabama where Desoto state park is located. Lot to see and do in the surrounding area and great park itself.
