Hi,
We are going to Ocean Lakes the end of April and I need the best route from Northeastern Pa. I would like to avoid D.C. if possible, and all roads with traffic lights. Thanks!!
We love the trip down the eastern shore through Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, and then accross the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. It is mostly 4 lane roads, but there are traffic lights. Much better scenery and less hectic than I-95 through the Baltimore=Washington corridor.
From NE PA, you could come down the Turnpike Extension to the Blue Route around Philly to I-95, take I-95 south through Wilmington, then pick up US 13 south from there.
If you are not in a hurry, you could cross over into New Jersey on Rt. 322 (Commodore Berry Bridge), then take Rt. 55 and 47 south to the Garden State Parkway and the Cape May Lewes Ferry. The ferry is a little expensive, but is a great ride.
In either case, there are lots of nice campgrounds on the way ....

Thanks for the suggestions but we took rt 13 on our way to Va. beach
and it took way too long for us. We have a limited amount of time and need the quickest route, we prefer mostly highway driving.
Try fastest route on Map quest or Google Maps. I think you will find the fastest is by getting on 95 and dealing with the DC area. Your best bet is traveling during off peak hours. Start your travel around 10:00 at night and cruise right on thru during the early morning hours.
Don't like the view?? Then change it and Go CampingOur pics
Don't even think about DC. Take I 81 south to just south of Winchester, VA. Then I 66 east to Route 17, follow 17 to 95 south. Miss all of Washington traffic. Almost all 4 lane, Much better on the nerves.
If you want to use a map program, put Winchester in as a waypoint.

I think you'll find the quickest route to be right down 95 and cut over 87 at Fayettville, then 131 at Tar Heel, to 131/410 to Bladenboro, to 701 to 9 over to the 31 bypass down to south Myrtle.
We've used the 81/66/17 route many times but find it to be a 40 mile longer trip.
Incidentally, we use 287 through Jersey to pick up 95 through Philly and time our departure to get through DC early afternoon. Worst of the traffic is 95 south of DC for about 6 or 7 exits.

Travel to MB yearly from Sunburym PA. Usually go 81-66-17-95 route which isn't too bad. Only problem area is the Fredericsburg area which can get busy entering onto 95 along with som traffic lights. The other problem area is the Richmond area, non rush hour, I stay on 95, rush hour 295.
An alternate route that I take every now and then is 81-64-288-95. This can add about 20-30 minutes but you it avoids the congestion at Fredericksburg and it is all interstate with no traffic lights. It is also very scenic.
Travel time for me is about 11 hours.
