Hi Everyone, We are going to stay at Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach next week for a week. I know I could just call and ask at the camprgound but I wanted to ask here. I prefer to "talk" to people virtually sometimes instead of live.

1) How is the Verizon cell phone service there? I usually don't have a problem with Verizon except in a few places - one of which is my own house!!! which is really frustrating and also in parts of Lake George.

2) Two of us have severe diet restrictions so I'm bringing our "special" food with us but I will most likely still need to get some stuff while there. We are not bringing a toad but are bringing bicycles. It looks like the campground has a great store but I will most likely need some stuff from a regular grocery store or even a Wal-Mart. Is there either within walking or bike riding distance if I get stuck and really need something? From looking on line it looks like there is a grocery store close and a Wal-Mart but I can't tell for sure if they are actually that close.

Thanks in advance. Take care.

Enjoy your stay. We leave in a week and a half for OL.

Our Verizon phones have 5 bars signal there, also much better than our house in CNY.

There is a WalMart a short distance from OL on Route 544 - a mile or two away. It gets very crowded later in the day into evening. Even early in the day it can be crowded. Traffic can be pretty heavy on 544 at times, especially at the Rt 17 interchange. Don't recall whether there are bicycle paths or such, but the roads are pretty flat. Would recommend early in the day. There are other grocery stores in the area as well. Don't remember the names or distance.

Good luck, Mike

Hello, Verizon cell phone service is excellent. There is also a phone line available right at your site. You can make free local calls, just bring your phone. There is a Krogers food market right across the street and to the right from the main entrance of the CG. (Rt 544 access and Rt 17 access)If you are on an Ocean front site, about 1 1/4 mile away(1 mile of it being CG itself) It is a nice market and will probably cover your needs. Dont forget the CG has free purified water stations, just bring your own container.

Don't like the view?? Then change it and Go CampingOur pics

I was there just last week and the Krogers store across the street from the campground is closed. I think that the closest store would be the walmart. My verizon phone and also broadband worked great in the campground.

Thats a shame, we liked that store and it was convenient if the CG store didn't have what we needed.

Wal-Mart too far away to bike ride. The Kroger shutting down is a bummer. It was a good store.I can't imagine that another wouldn't be placed in that area soon.

Check it out on Google Maps (Satellite View). The Kroger was very easy just across the street. Not sure of you physical condition but people do ride bikes to Walmart from the campground if you don't need cold foods in the middle of the summer. Go straight out of the campground and stay on 544 you will see Walmart.

There is a Food Lion on 17 Business, about one mile north.... There is a service road that runs parallel to 17 Business (west side) and it covers about 50% of the distance. If you ride your bike(s) down the beach to Myrtle Beach State Park you will almost be across from the Food Lion Plaza. Never.... Never try to bike down the 544 to Walmart as people in cars often end their lives on this road and I can't imagine how people on bicycles would do.

Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful. Sounds like I'll just have to plan carefully or try biking to Food Lion. I live in a very busy dangerous area where a few people trying to cross the road a couple 100 ft. from our house have been killed over the years. I'm totally comfortable driving or walking anywhere in NY City but I would still probably not be comfortable walking or biking in areas that I'm not familiar with if they are dangerous. I think if I do take the bike somewhere I'll do it early but definitely when it is light out.

We're excited. It will just be so nice to get out after this long cold winter and get away from my insanely busy job (not complaining as I know I'm super lucky to still be employed!!!) I'll be working some of the time so it sounds like I'll probably be able to get at least some internet service.

Thanks again for the replies. Take care, Beth

I hope you have a good time down there. My girlfreind and I where down there for the first time 2 weeks ago. We loved it there. Ocean Lakes does have its own grocery store. I am not sure if it has what you need exactly, but does have lots of stuff.
