I am thinking about converting my SRW 1-ton to a dually. I was thinking it should be as simple as longer wheel studs and a couple of fiberglass fender and wheels and tires of course Am I missing something? I have looked online and all I find are conversion kits to make a 1/2 ton into a dually...I have the same axle as the dually and I have added air bags so weight isn't an issue. I want to get the added stability without having to buy a new truck. Has this been done before?

Thanks,
Alan

take your time and check it out , studs wont do it the wheels will not fit over the existing drums. You can purchase dual wheel adapter kit and finder kits on line but it is not a true convertion. you might find it cheaper to pick up the rear axle assembly at a bone yard and pick up a new body take off from a truck dealer. you will still have an issue with the front wheels being diffeant.(two spares). you might shop arround fo a late modle wreck and do a full hub replacement . Either way it's expensive to do it right..

You have the same 11.5" AAM axle as the dually, but they're a different width.

I'd find a dually axle to put uder your truck.

Swap rear axles and springs, add drw front hub adaptors, swap wheels, add two more tires, cut bed sides, add dually fenders with marker lamps, add roof and rear marker lamps, that should about cover it.

my buddy had duallys then he ended up gettin a 3/4 ton short bed. To make a long story short; A gooseneck pulled over scales between 25 and 30,000 # He put monster, like off a road tracter, airbags and built mounts aired up. he said it was as stable as the duallys. But he is insane too. Just thought i'd get it out there.

I went through this back in 05 when I wanted my dually. Then I owned an 01 2500 CTD. By the time I priced everything out, dually kit front and rear, 7 tires/wheels, fat fenders, relocating fuel fill door and paint it was over $6000. And after all that I'm sure it would have hurt the retail value.

I ended up with a brand new actual dually for $10,000 difference. Best move I made.

there are ramifications of converting a lower capacity vehicle to a higher capacity vehicle. Read NHTSA regs and in particular about half way down where it pertains to carring load capacity (GVWR/GAWR).

In my state its almost impossible to get any certified alterer or a certified vehicle modifier to change those numbers when the modidication was done by just a individual. I would check with your state for their input on any registration/resale problems or your insurance carrier for any problems from their end.

Another option is to leave it an SRW and install some Rickson wheels and 19.5" real truck tires to handle the weight.
