we are finally going to alaska. this seems to be the year with deseil reasonable compared to last year. we hope to stop in banff and/or lake louise on our way north. any recommendation as to camping in the provential or private campgrounds in or near this area. we hate crowds so outside of banff or near lake louise probably would be better suited for us. thanks in advance.

Stayed in Spring Creek Mountain Villiage Canmore ,Alberta 9/9-10/07for Banff it was around 40.00 per day and was very nice
Stayed in Hinton-Jasper KOA Hinton, Alberta 9/11-12/13 and it was also nice
Outside Banff is Kananaskis County - kinda ssw of Banff - very nice parks - no hookups - we stayed there last summer - saw lots of wildlife. In Lake Louise pretty much the only show in town is the PP right in the center... Not much to look at as far as a park goes - has hookups - but the location is very convenient. For a 1-night stopover it worked great. Hold out for a good day as you drive north on the Icefields Parkway - this is a "can't miss" stretch of scenery!!! We opted for the eastern route - towards Hinton (full-service community), then north on 40 (?) to Grand Cache and on to Dawson Creek. Have fun!

The above is the site for campgrounds in Banff National Park. The first week of July will be very busy, Canada Day July 1, Your July 4 plus the Calgary Stampede starts July 3. You can reserve at some of the larger campgrounds. You may find the smaller campgrounds very tight. The spots are usually spread out so you don't feel that crowded.
Banff Townsite is very busy. Lake Louise less so and the scenery is more spectacular. I think Lake Louise merits at least 2 nights. Visit Morraine Lake and travel into Yoho National Park to Takaka Falls, north of Field. Both Beautiful areas. If you have time consider the O'Hara Lake option in Yoho. Bus access only.
Tunnel Mountain Campground in Banff is run by the National Parks Service, it has several sections with different levels of service (hook ups, camp fires etc).
The main RV area with hoop-ups is quite open and lacks privacy, but the tenting areas (no hook-ups) has room for smaller rv's and is beautiful, treed, with lots of space between the sites.
We have stayed later in July without a reservation, but it was only for one night. The area deserves a few nights to take in the sights.
The cg at Lake Louise is a great spot for a two day layover. It is central for exploring Banff national Park - Banff town, Lake Minnewanka, Moraine lake, lake Louise itself, Yoho National park with Emerald lake, Takkakaw Falls, the spiral tunnels and when ready to head on it is the startibg point for the Icefields Parkway to Jasper.
And yes - reservation here is absolutely necessary in July or August. Make that at http://www.pccamping.ca/parkscanada/en/
PM me anytime for details on any of these sites, routes etc.
