Hmm... just to make sure all posters understand... I would never dump grey water within my campsite or anywhere near another campsite. I meant rolling out a hose as far as it goes into the woods - absolutely no campers behind us at all, just nature.

Goodness who are those idiots who washed diapers in the shower pan and then allowed it to dump out the grey onto the ground. I guess you've got a point..."common sense" isn't that common I suppose it's not much diff. than idiots who are drunk or men I've heard of who can't wait for a bathroom to open-up and pee in the sink. Totally gross. My DH would no longer be an H if he did something so disgusting!

Who's grey water is so stinky anyway that it couldn't immediately be run thru a hose? Don't most people wipe dishes off first before washing them in the sink if they have food remenants and sauces on them etc? My rig doesn't have a waste disposal system on it and I hate cleaning drains and drain filters...yuck! Does anyone have a disposal system on theirs? What about the big rigs?

Wow how a topic can be so insanely interesting? for such a basic subject... This is why I'm asking...ask before you act

I remember the old days, preceding indoor plumbing, when things were quite different. Further, folks weren't aware of the contents of available products and their impact on the environment. Eventually, the social outcry ensued and rightly so. But... similar to the realm of political correctness, the pendulum of environmental social pressure reaches it's opposite amplitude and can sometimes border on the ridiculous.

With that in mind, here I go!!! LOL. In a campground with a nearby dump station(?)... use the dump! Traveling between destinations(?)... scope out public and private dump stations along the route, and even if you have to pay, use the dump. Boondocking in the middle of nowhere, miles & miles from civilization... use common sense. Don't dump near a body of water. Under urgent circumstances, dig a hole and cover it up. Doubt that many RVers will fall into that category, but some will.

Grey water is a bit of a euphemism. Once the water used to cook pasta or potatoes gets mixed in with the rest of the washing water, anaerobic fermentation feeds on nutrients and the smell quickly becomes putrid.

I have noticed some camper trailers have the drain hose from the sink dripping straight to the ground, or in a bucket that often overflows. Even that, which involves water that did not sit in a tank, is not the most appealing sight/thought.

Eycom: I'm just referring to our occassional stays longer than 3 days on the same site to avoid the whole blue tote thing.

For the occassional times we're at a private campground would a "honey wagon" actually take the grey water as well? I'm not familiar with this service.

I agree with your sentiments. I used to be an HR Mgr. and also Dept. director and let me tell you... HR Dept's should be called Stupidity Handling Legal Dept. Employee law, let alone consumer law has gone out of control! Our suing society is going to make us a robotic society... "must check with my lawyer before I can think" or "must contact my lawyer before I can take a ----" Before long it seems we'll have to draft a contract for the right to breathe freely around another human being without fear of being sued.

No I'm not a smoker - I'm all for restricting/suing them. Let them smoke in a confined area and quarantine them into a locked-down, cult community of their own to stink and eventually die of lung cancer away from us non-smokers. Let them pay for their own healthcare 100% out of pocket or let them suffer. Second-hand smoke, lingering smell on clothing, furniture and fabrics and lastly nasty, non-mint covering breath is disgusting. Can I stand by you with caustic chemical fumes please? Think not...so there shouldn't be a double-standard. Sorry soapbox there...

bovellis: I was wondering about the whole food decompostion thing... if noodle rinsing can create such a stink then I'm not about to try hosing the grey down the back 40. Thanks for pointing out the "little things" that often get unnoticed. I guess all one needs as a reminder too is how putrid a casserole dish gets if left more than overnight to soak the stuck-on food off.

Ok so now if anyone wants to share what the honey wagon senario involves beyond the obvious I'd appreciate it. Also - any tips on the blue tote buying (best prices where?) and utilization techniques for least offensive order experience while using one would be appreciated.

If the water was used for showering (and you get clean) it will contain Fecal Coliform bacteria. You decide.

I spent years in the Boy Scouts too and don't remember hauling any grey water out of the forest. I believe grey water is only polluting if someone sees you dump it.

TX: Thanks for having the guts to post such.

Interesting isn't it how it's ok to soap up and clean off (ecoli & whatnot) in an outdoor solar shower in the middle of the woods or on a remote tent campsite... I guess the "footprint" aspect doesn't apply as it's not multiplied as in congested campground. Oh what knowledge and discovery can do to conflict the heart and mind.

Gray (grey) water dumping is a popular subject...Dumping gray on ground
Dump gray - April 09

As the self-appointed Search cop, I'll add this post to the list of 'gray water dumping.'
