Even if your trailer is 5k lbs that truck should pull it fine. In fact I would expect overdrive to be useable if you have the 17" wheels. There is not a huge difference (5% which is probably 100 rpm on the highway) between 3.55 and 3.73 and a 3.73 gear is rated to pull over 9k lbs in an F150.

Hi,

Now I'm confused, stated is the 3.73 is not much different than the 3.55 but it seems the towing capacity goes up quite a bit with the 3.73's, If correct that would be 3.55 towing 6500 or 3.73 towing 9000lbs.

The 6400# the poster mentioned sounds low, maybe for a 4.6 engine? I suspect the rating is higher for a 5.4. That actually makes the problem look worse if she's struggling with a 4000# TT. I'm waiting for someone with better reference material than myself to answer.

No question that engine loves to spin, but that doesn`t sound right to me either. Brakes dragging? Exhaust blocked? Intake blocked? Computer trouble? Have the dealer look at it.

Should pull on flat in OD with no problem.
If you have had no problems with this truck not
towing, maybe look at trailer brakes, bearings, brake controller, etc.

The #6400 tow rating is for the 4.6L. Thats what I have and it pulls 5000 no problem. Probably a tv problem.

ok, while i was driving my 08 F150 today on the highway, i was thinking about this and not to be a smart butt about it, but when you say you turned off the OD, did you hit the button or did you drop out of "D" to "2"? and again, im not calling anyone stupid here, just at 50mph and 3300rpm, sounds like your were not in 3rd gear.

i tow my 7200# with OD off at 60mph at 2250rpm.

i just know on older trucks, they had a "D" with a circle around it for OD and then a just plain "D" for out of OD. just a thought!!!

Agree with everyone here that something doesnt sound right.

Unless on your route you were going uphills both ways. My dad went that way when he was a kid. Only he was barefoot and it was in the snow.

4.10/4.30 gear & a Hypertech tuner set for premuim fuel will turn that truck into a TOW BEAST. But it does sound like the power is lower than normal production power. Get it on a rear wheel Dynometer for proof. IMO a 3.55 ratio is a Joke for towing!!!
