I figure it will play like the bird flue did, but since I am working in a health care situation as a volunteer, I just sent my director of our clinic an email asking about what if any precaustions we are going to take if it reaches our state. Should be interesting to see what she says.

In the fall of 2006 I was working for the Department of Defense when managers were advised of the potential for a worldwide pandemic flu virus within the next 10 years. The strain would be of an unfamiliar origin and therefore a vaccine would not be available before millions were infected. That to me is why the cause for concern. I would rather see the government being overly cautious than to ignore this issue. See the below link.

My wife works again on Thursday and we are both wondering if they will have a staff meeting because of it.

Just bad luck? A random outbreak? I don't think so.

My business requires me to be in as many as 10 -12 different homes per week. If this thing gets started up here I guess I will have to put things on hold for a while. You can't imagine the amount of people that are sick and will not reschedule an appointment.

I have found that if I run in circles clockwise screaming my lungs out in fear I never catch the flu.

I think this works because that is apparently what the news media is trying to get us to do. They do, after all, know everything.

Doesn't anyone else remember the huge SARS scare? Then of course there was the Bird Flu. Wow, we lost almost 1/2 the country's population with that one. We would all be better off if the teleblabbers, (news reporters) just shut the heck up.

Deaths from the flu, just your ordinary yearly occurrence type of flu, averages around 35,000 per year. Why don't the teleblabbers get all excited about that? Why? Well, it isn't headlines....it isn't scary enough. They can't drag every so-called expert on their show and implant visions of terror into the public's mind. Which it seems the public is more than happy to absorb.

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

I realize some people are blaming "the media" for trying to make a $$$ trying to scare us, however:

  • The CDC has activated its Emergency Operations Center, issued Guidance for Professionals recommending facemasks and respirators in certain situations and issued a Travel Warning to "Avoid Nonessential Travel to Mexico".
  • The Department of Homeland Security has issued a public health emergency.
  • The World Health Organization raised the alert level to Phase 4, meaning there is sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus causing outbreaks in at least one country.
  • The government of Mexico canceled school at all levels nationwide until May 6, and the Mexico City government said it was considering a complete shutdown, including all public transportation, if the death toll keeps rising. Authorities announced Monday the cancellation of the annual Cinco de Mayo parade. The National Institute of Anthropology and History said all of its 116 museums nationwide would be closed until further notice.

Now when Cinco de Mayo is cancelled, THAT'S SERIOUS!

As I said before, I hope it turns out to be not that big a deal, but if it does, it won't be because it was ignored because they thought it was just a media scare.

I wonder what the ramifications would be for the economy if this actually does develop into something as bad as it could - especially since it's still in a recession. If people can't work - not just because they're sick but because the govt has shut things down - how will the businesses survive when we can't pay our bills? Will they try to repossess your cars if you can't make your payments even if it's not your fault? What about your un-paid-for house? If you can't make the house payment because the economy has crashed, what then? Hey Don! When do you activate phase 2 of the bugout plan?

I think most people don't understand at all how "flu" works, particularly a brand new strain. I have researched it quite a bit ('cause I find it hugely interesting), but still only have a rudimentary understanding. Does the media sensationalize things? Of course, they're trying to attract an audience. Have they been completely wrong about these flu outbreaks? NO!

A new strain of flu isn't something that goes from a spark to a blaze within a couple weeks or usually even months. If you listened to the CDC briefings, you'll remember that the Acting Director emphasized several times that this won't be a sprint, it will be a marathon. He wasn't meaning days versus weeks! Bird flu is still very much a real threat. That's why the WHO already had us at Level 3 (of 6) on the pandemic alert system. Our gotta-have-it-now-what's-big-news-today-is-forgotten-about-tomorrow-thinking doesn't have the patience or attention span anymore to realize that some things develop over time. Sometimes a long time, relatively speaking to our short attention spans.

If this swine flu becomes a true threat (right now it just has the potential) it very well may not be in the next couple weeks or months, except maybe for those who live in the southern hemisphere and are going into their flu season soon. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the real threat may be next fall/winter. Or for all of us it could be several flu seasons down the road (just as the bird flu strain their watching could become a huge problem several years from now).

Two million dead. Hospitals overwhelmed. Schools closed. Swaths of empty seats at baseball stadiums and houses of worship. An economic recovery snuffed out. We're nowhere close to what government planners say would be a worst-case scenario: a global flu pandemic.....
(article)We are no where close to this, but the news agencies can speculate about how bad it can get.

I see a familiar pattern here. Oh yes, these articles are sounding like the Global Warming "news" articles. An example of this sort of global warming doomsday is here. They go on and on about how bad it will be if "the most dire predictions of global warming and sea level rises occur...".

So now news is no longer "the facts", but worst case projections of how bad it could be.
