In a few weeks, I'll be traveling to Colorado Springs with my DD. She is doing an internship there and needs a vehicle. I feel more comfortable if I tag along for her trip out... Looking for suggestions and advice on routes, areas to avoid, times to avoid in particular areas. Please realize this does not involve towing. Thanks in advance.

the worst part will be going by Chicago but I don't see any simple way for you to avoid that. Maybe at 2:30 am?

I would drop down to I-70, point it West and drop the hammer. Take I-70 all the way to Limon, Colorado, then take US-24 straight into the Springs.

I would avoid the Denver metro area. Way too many idiots in this part of the state.

As far as some of the larger metro areas in route, you can always use the by-passes.

Good luck, and enjoy the ride.

I would pick up I-70 in Columbus or sooner and use the by-passes around Indy (465) and St Louis (270). Keep on i-70 to Limon, Colorada and then pick up US-24 to Colorado Springs.

If you want to avoid the big cities, St. Louis, Kansas City you can take hwy 36 through IN, IL,MO,KS. Just west of Norton KS Hwy 383 angles south west to Colby and I-70 Then take 70 to Limon.

My Grandma used to live about 30 miles east of Limon. She went to Limon at least once a week to the Dr. and the bank. She quit driving on interstate 70 when she was 98 and lived to be 102. You can think about that when you are between Arriba and Limon.

The interstate routes are the quickest, but if you have a few extra days, you might consider taking US highways or even state highways. IMHO, this is a better way to experience this country. When I drove from CO to RI for college many years ago, I think I was on interstate highway for about 25 miles of the whole trip. Sure, it took an extra few days, but I went places I'd never been to before, and some I've never seen since. This is easier since you're not towing. Looking at the map in you sig, there are several states along the way that aren't colored in. What a wonderful opportunity.
