HVAC Supply houses usually sell CO in a spray can to test detectors. They come in a kit that includes a plactic shower cap that is put over the detector, the tube from the can is poked thru the cap and a two second burst of CO is administered. Tape is put over the hole in the cap and within a few minutes the detector should go off. It is not like a smoke detector as it may take a few minutes to beep.

As said before, they should be replaced every 6 years as they do wear out without warning.
