We are shopping for a used DP, years range from 01'-06'. I would like to know if there are any Diesel engines that I should be aware of?

My grandfather (truck driver and former DP owner) was always a fan of Cummins. I am also partial to them, but would like to keep an open mind.

We are shopping for floorplan, but I would like to have something 300hp or more! We will be towing a 20' Enclosed trailer.

Thanks in advance

Cummins makes an excellent engine. You do want to avoid one model... This defect involves Cummins ISL CMS5O diesel engines produced for recreational
vehicle applications between October 17,2005 and April 18, 2006. They had a machining problem in the wrist pin area that would cause the engine to seize up. the fix was to add a monitor to advise you when this was about to happen.

I would stay away from these ones

If you are going to pull a 20ft. enclosed trailer make sure the motorhome your looking for can handle it. A lot of DP,s only have a 5000lb. hitch. It is very easy to find once you put 200lbs. of wieght on the hitch you are over wieght on the rear axle. Marty

Quite true, but the ISL 400 in general is outstanding. Of the engines recalled, only 60 had the problem with piston wrist pin failure, but they could not tell which 60, so they recalled 2,000 engines. All failures occured in the first 10,000 miles, most in the first 4,000. Mine has 57,000 miles and has been perfect.

In those years and 400 HP or less, it does not make any difference although I'd stay away from the small 5.9 Cummins with only 600 ftlbs or less of torque to pull your trailer.

By mid 2001, competition among manufacturers was such that just about any DP above entry level had a 10K rated hitch. By 04/05, many were offering 18K rates on the higher end models. Mainly due to use of enclosed/stacker trailers.

I agree that the 5.9 is probably a bit light for jobs pulling more than 25,000lbs GVW. If you did look at a 5.9 stay away from the dreaded 53 block. This can have a problem with cracking.

The 5.9 (ISB) is probably too small for your needs, so the ISC or ISL would be more appropriate. Both would serve you well.
