What brand of detector? Make and model
It is a CCI controls LPgas Detector Pre-Tell2 (picture below) I called CCI and they appear to be out of business. I wanted their thoughts on it.
I am going camping soon so I want to make sure it turns on when I need it. I am going to start trying to turn it on a day before and once it opens then leaving it there until I can figuare out what needs to be replaced!
Maybe this will help!

Why do turn it on and off? Maybe you have worn the switch out so it only makes contact part of the time.
Turn it on and leave it on!

My experience is that the propane detectors tend to last 3-5 yrs .. then they start to give off false alarms and need to be replaced. I have never seen/heard of a propane detector that occasionally didn't open up the solenoid.
If your detectors is old you should consider replacing it (going to have to do it eventually anyway) -- if you still have the problem then replace the solenoid.

Thanks for the link. I just looked at it and that particular unit looks like an alarm only (good information though). Mine also has a yellow wire that pops the solenoid open and holds it open for the propane to flow. I turn it on and off due to the fact that once it is on and stops beeping if the soloenoid does not open then it does me no good to leave it on. So, at that point turn it off for a few moments and back on then wait to see if the solenoid opens this time after the initial beeping.
I did give you the incorrect model. Here is the correct one. The yellow wire furnishes the ground for the start up mode, while it is chirping.
