When I bought my RV the salesman hooked me up with American modern insurance. I think their customer service is terrible. They won't even return my phone calls to answer some simple questions. Can anybody recommend a good reliable and affordable RV insurance company?

The main thing to remember is to do business with a company who offers a specific RV policy. Several agents advertise in the major RV magazines, as well as the companies they represent. I had National Interstate and switched to Progressive which is being brokered by USAA, who I have done business with since 1960

If an RV salesman hooked you up, you're probably taking a bath on premiums and will likely take a bigger bath if you have an accident. The salesman just wanted another commission.

Talk to your regular insurance agent (the one you insure your cars, home, etc. with). I've used Allstate for years and my agent always returns my calls----if he doesn't take them in the first place.

Also, please fill in your profile or your signature so people know what kind of an RV is being talked about. The MH in my signature costs me about $450 a year for insurance ($500 deductible but full glass coverage).

Give Progressive a whirl. I've never had a claim, but I've seen very little negative press about them on this forum. A search on this forum for the words Progressive Insurance will produce quite a bit of reading. We get our auto and home insurance through USAA and like Kayo says, they use Progressive for their RV insurance.

I have Allstate insurance and have NO complaints. I know some will say others are cheaper, but sometimes cheaper does not matter when they dont return your call, or when you have a claim and they want to drag their feet and not take care of what you have paid for.

I ran out of talent one night and clipped the front of my buggy trailer as I was backing up and completely took out the right rear belly box storage door and compartment. (Some how I did not hurt the rear cap!) I called Allstate and filed a claim telling them what I did in the driveway. Allstate said take it to the repair shop of my choice. At that point I talked to them twice during the time of repair, and that was only because they were letting me know when adjusters had been out looking at the MH at the repair shop. Or when checks had been issued to the shop.

Also Allstate has a feature where you can put a freeze on your policy when the vehicle is not going to be used. So for example lets say you know your not going to use the RV for all of May. You can call them and they will freeze your policy, except for Fire and Theft coverage. So instead of paying $50 a month you might pay $10 for the month. The only trick is you need to remember to call your local agent and ask them to un-freeze the coverage before you take it out. And you can do this as often as you like.

I have done this with my RV and with an street legal off-road play car that I have. They told me because my Pre-Runner car is kept in my garage that I could even freeze the Fire and Theft because the Homeowners insurance would cover it. But I figured keeping the Fire and Theft was not that big of a deal. So I figured with this option I can make up the money that I might have saved with another company.

We too have USAA for our home and cars, but USAA does not insure RV's and they did not want to insure my off-road pre-runner cars. So I used Allstate for both the RV, Off-road car and theft coverage for my trailer. Before we switched to USAA I had all my stuff covered with Allstate.

I just bought a new 08 Mandalay had it only 2 weeks got it broke in to they stole everything from 3 TV to the toilet paper.I have Progressive and had a check for personal items in two week. I am waiting for the repairs to be finished next week. I have a check in hand to already for $13,000 to pay when it done. At this point I highly recommend Progressive.

I have Geico and they have been very good. Got quotes from Progressive and Hartford and they were both double what I'm paying.

You might want to go online and research insurance surveys, I watched one 2 weeks ago on one of the networks, and they rated Progressive dead last among all large companies.
