Wow!!! Glad you're OK. I got stuck in a wind storm in February with 60 mph crosswinds on the I75 in Ohio and lost my awning while towing south bound. I feel very lucky and fortunate that our unit did not get blown over.

Where is the trailer?

Look behind the wrecker truck. That flat thing with a few bits & pieces on top. THAT is all that is left of the trailer itself.

I imagine it would have made a hellluva video clip seeing it tumble down the embankment.

So far we have found about 6 in the NW worth a look to us. I know. We are FAR too picky.

Tell us what you did with the junk and did you do the work to clean up the area. Did you get a traffic ticket?

It looks to me like the pin twisted right out of the hitch plate! But what I don't see is a "LOCKING PIN" in the release handle of the hitch although I do see a dent in the handle. Is there one there? Did the jaws force open because the handle was not locked closed? I am not pointing blame, I am just interested in knowing if the handle was locked with a pin. And I do believe that IF the trailer remained LOCKED to the truck that the extra wide dually stance and truck weight MAY have kept if from blowing over. Of course we will never know but I am curious about the handle lock.

I also see the brake cable still in the truck. Did the trailer brakes lock up when it broke loose?

I'm not sure about the looks of this either. I have had many trips in these kinds of winds up and down these parts. Stability in these conditions is one of the reasons I tow a fiver, as we in CO and WY have to deal with this kind of wind all the time and all year long. One just never knows when, or where, you are going to get hit. Frank, you have some great questions.

If you look at the first picture you can see the remains of the fiver itself. You can see the underside and the kingpin at the front of the trailer...the other pictures just show the debris field after the unit was removed.

Veebyes, sorry for your loss--I have a simular rig in size--definatly give us pause for thought in windy conditions.

Those pictures should be made into a sticky for those that ask if they can ride in the back of a fiver while moving...

The hitch was a Super 5th, Pull Rite.

Primary attention after the blowever was on salvaging stuff. The 5th hitch plate was bent pretty bad & a piece of one of the jaws was left in the truck bed all mangled up. Looks like there was terrific twisting action. Again we are glad it let go & thankful for the dually. The frame of the hitch appears to be in good shape as does the area in the bed around it.

The brake pin DID pull out & the brakes on the right side DID have a chance to lock, leaving a short mark on the hwy before hitting the shoulder then rolling down the embankment.

Hopefully this incident will give those pulling or thinking of pulling a large 5er with a SRW something to consider.

Sorry, forgot to answer a question earlier. No, no citation. Act of God or act of nature, your call.

The Trooper had seen it before & marks on the hwy, shoulder & embankment told the story pretty good.

Truck is in the shop now. We have completed our side of all the insurance paperwork. Hopefully we will be on our way with a list of replacement stops real soon. This hotel living gets tiresome real fast.

Cheyenne is a nice enough town but it is not Disney.
