Hello I need some help with my toyhauler. I currently have a 21' tahoe by Thor, bumper pull that is a 2002 model that works very well for my family. My wife wants to sell it and get something bigger because our family is growing and she would also like to take other family members with us. She found a 2005 Tahoe by Thor but a 36' fithwheel. Now I have no provlem pulling this trailer and it is with in the weight limit of my truck for what I will be hauling. My problem is not the money but it is alot of trailer for our family and dont know if i can justify going from a 21' to 36', I just dont think that we need all that room. The price is right and thats what has her going and with 2 slide out and only 75hrs on the genny it is hard to pass up.
I guess my question is, is bigger always better. My truck is set up to pull it but do we need it. It would be nice to have the room, but i think that the size of it my limit to were we can take it. Any advice would be great, thanks for you help.
Is bigger better? I think so. You should have no problem getting in most everywhere with a 36' fifth wheel. If it's your wife that wants the bigger hauler and you're not having to sell her, I'd count myself blessed! JMO
Its a personal decision. Generally, if the wife likes it, I do it cause life is then good. Bigger usually means more room to roam which makes for more fun.
I have found myself going from 26', to 30 ' to 36' to my current 40'. Even though I complain sometimes, it is a great amount of room that most friends and family wish they had,...I love the room and have had to live in it 4 times thus far because it is large enough to do that.
I'de do it in a heartbeat. Can NEVER have too much room in a trailer.

This is my opinion based on my experiences. GO BIGGER! I started out with an old 31' Airstream. I used that puppy to death then eventually gave it away. From that I moved up to a 33' Coachmen 5th wheel. I loved the additional ceiling height and the fact it had a large slide out. I was no longer bumping my head on everything. Then I found my self cramped for hauling toys like kayaks. So I passed the old Coachmen down to one of my sons to use as a camp on some property he had and bought a really fine 40' Jayco Talon toy hauler. It has so much storage I sometimes wonder if I should just move in and live in it. I love it. I can't imagine ever going back down in size. Now and then there will be three or four friends along and there are three queen sized beds plus the dinette makes a small bed. There's plenty of outside storage, so much so that I stole a little bit of it and installed a 19 gallon conventional hot water heater inside so we never run out of hot water.
I don't travel with kids, but I can see where this thing would be ideal for a large family or for people traveling together. Of course I still have fond memories of my girlfriend and a couple of her girlfriends and myself all having to make do with the one queen sized bed in the old Airstream. So there's no doubt in my mind that it's sometimes fun to be in close cramped quarters with the right people. But if I were you I'd go for the extra room. It's not going to hurt you much for towing, parking, and camping.
Just give in and buy it, of course you don't need any bigger....but she wants it! enough said. I was happy with my tent, carried it all in a little 5x8 trailer behind my Jeep Wrangler. Wife decided a trailer would be more fun. I sold the Jeep, utility trailer, and tent. I bought a new truck, two utility quads, and a 30' toyhauler. Now she has her eye on a 5th wheel, I'll hold out....but there's no way I'll win.
I don't think I will ever go into a bigger trailer. This is a perfect size. Sure you guys think it's great having 40's but for me, I am hardly in my trailer enough to need more room. When we take our trailer out (Wife, 6yr boy, 2yr girl, and I) I am only in there while we are eating breakfast, getting changed, bathroom, and sleeping. The cargo carries everything I need so that isn't an issue. All the other times I am outside in a chair or riding. I have two LCD's and never really watched anything. My kids and wife are the same way, we love just being outside and not locked up in a big trailer. just my .02

Bigger does have a few drawbacks, for us it was worth it. Keep in mind that bigger usually means you are going to be hauling a little more, so keep that in mind with the limits.
