I have dual Coleman 8633 AC's. The fan runs fine on my front unit, but the compressor repeatedly tries to kick on and won't. I smelled a slight electrical burn odor. I am camping right now, so haven't had a chance to get up on the roof to pull the shroud. Does this sound like it may be a burned out run capacitor.

when was the last time you used this A/C, sounds like a locked rotor on the compressor

The burning smell would lead me to look at all of the wires/connections first.

A locked rotor will have no smell, it will simply trip out on overload, either the Klixon under the terminal cover or the internal overload. Breaker tripping is also common.

Shut off ALL power to the RV before working on the AC.

You will need a Phillips screwdriver and a 5/16 inch nut driver to remove the shroud and access the wires and capacitors and compressor terminal cover. I am willing to bet you will see the burnt/melted spot right off the bat.

I spend every day of my life trying to understand that other people in this world do things differently than I do.

Might also check the breaker panel. I had a similar problem and found a loose wire in the back of the breaker panel. The insulation was melted about an inch up the wire and that was what created the smell.

When they installed the unit on the RV they never tightened the lugs in the breaker panel.

Good luck, be safe.

I actually noticed this problem while camping a couple weeks ago at Merlefest. I didn't smell anything at that time and I thought the problem may have been inadequate power in the campground. After shutting both AC's down overnight, everything worked fine the rest of that trip. When I got home, I started the generator and ran the AC for around a half hour. It ran fine.

I have been using the AC for 2 days while on this trip without any issues. This morning when I turned down the thermostat, I noticed the compressor trying to kick on every 2-3 minutes. I don't won't to try to restart it until I can see if anything burned.

I forgot to mention in my previous post, I will check everything when I get home tomorrow morning. Of course all this happens with only a few days before a long Memorial Day trip. I am hoping it is something I can fix on my own because I know trying to get into a shop in the next couple of days will be difficult.
