Planning on leaving the reading area on June 11th. Taking I 78 to 287 west of Newark continue North to the Toll section turning east into N.Y.around White plains and over to 15 N.E. into CT.

Is this doable with a 36 ft 5th wheel in tow? Is the Toll section open to those of us towing a trailer? Thank-you for the input in advance.

I'm not sure if you can tow a trailer on the Merrit Parkway (Rt. 15),...quite often, "Parkways" are more restrictive towards "commercial" or oversized vehicles......but, I'm sure that others familiar with the area (I've only driven it once, a long time ago) will answer that question.

Personally, unless you have things that you want to see between Reading and New Haven, I'd take the more direct run across the George Washington Bridge and up I-95 directly into New Haven.

I would recommend that taking that route would be best served if you go during "Of-peak" hours, so there is less traffic. The roads are well marked through the city, and I'd imagine that you probably have a GPS (doesn't everyone??). You'll save some gas and some time.

Have a great trip.....I'm just leaving New Haven, as I'm typing....but, I'm leaving by sea!! (working on a tugboat) :-)

Yikes, no, you can't take a 5er on the Merritt or any other Parkway. Just take 287 across the Tappan Zee Bridge and stay on it all the way to Route 95, which goes through New Haven.

If you were already pretty far east, then I'd agree with taking 95 all the way, including the GW Bridge. But starting out in Reading, you're far enough west so that 287 is a better choice. Route 84 heads north, so that doesn't make sense at all.

Tappan Zee is under constructio and delays are nuts. Small fortune to cross GW bridge and traffic up 95 is nuts. Same amount of time to take the route I posted earlier

Not sure just where you want to go in New Haven because ther are no campgrounds there...but 78 to 287 then to 95 is shortest distance to New Haven downtown...DO NOT US RT 15 AS IT HAS 10 FT BRIDGES...AND RESTRICTED......now,a little longer but probably less traffic, would be 78 t0 287 NORTH to Newburgh to 84 and then maybe x-7 to rt 34 down into NH......Chuck
