Hello,
My husband and I have just purchased a used 5th wheel.. It is older 10 years but in great condition.. The previous owner kept a detailed log of any maintance preformed including washing and waxing of the unit..It is a 27 ft Moblie Scout with one slide out...
We are planning on trying it out for a year or two for weekend and long weekend trips before we hit retirement. If we like it we will upgrade and go on the road part-time each year.. We would love to see the National Parks at a nice slow pace.
Our first trip out is next weekend..Backing into the camping space is my husband's biggiest concern..We spend all evening driving around the area, big roads, little roads. shopping centers, parking lots, you name it we drove through it today..but no campsite parking ...that will have to wait until next friday..
Well I am sure I will be on with many questions..and stories of our new beginnings as 5thwheelers...

My wife and I purchased a used '93 Dutchmen 5er with one slide about 6 years ago. It too had detailed maintenance records and was in excellent condition. We have made several (but not enough) trips and have really enjoyed it. I had never owned an RV before so I took it to a shopping center one evening, placed some borrowed traffic cones in various patterns and practiced backing and parking the unit. So far, knock on wood, I have not put any dents in either the tow truck or the RV. Good luck and I hope you really enjoy the experiences to come. Happy camping!!!

I learned to back up in a large parking lot with no cars. Find one and practice backing into the spaces.

Welcome to the forum and the joy of RVing...

Agree with above posts.. parking lot practice with orange cones. We also use hand-held two way radios to keep from shouting (i.e.yelling) at each other.. LOL.

Hope you have many happy & safe trips.

Those old Sunnybrook/Mobile Scouts real hold up well. They weren't making the lites 10 yrs ago so yours still has the heavier cabinets and more bells and whistles. We had a SB 24CKFS that we took a lot of long vacations in and we did fine. We wanted something bigger with recliners and free standing dinette as we got older and softer. The jack-knife sofa and booth dinette wasn't very good for relaxing at night. If you have the 5er I'm thinking of, it's probably longer than 27'. They usually run about 1-2' longer than the model number. I think you have the pass-through basement in your model 27xxxx. I bet you'll like it a lot! Craig

The biggest thing when backing into a campsite it to not get in a hurry. Take your time and if you have to pull out a few times and start over, no big deal. In no time he will be an expert at it.

Many rv places have pull through so backing may not present a huge problem. It is a good idea, though, to know how to do it without taking out the side of the 5er or the back end of the pickup. Hope you have lots of fun with it. kkd
