Thanks everyone for all your replies and helpfulness. She did really well on the camping trip except for waking up really early and barking.

That was in May. Here's my beautiful girl now. This was taken a month or so ago, now she's 55 pounds of beautiful dog. She's 7 months old today.

Absolutely beautiful chocolate lab!!! I am partial to chocolate labs!!!! She will make a wonderful companion. Of course they don't grow up until they are 2-4 years old. That is our problem - Willow is 20 months old and a riot with a bit of brat mixed in.

The puppy doesn't all go until about 9 years old, if then.

My Chesapeakes all were at full size by 8 months. It's deceptive, re maturity.

She is absolutely beautiful. I've always wanted a chocolate! The problem is that so far when we're looking we always fall in love with the ones at the shelter, which have happened to be yellow and then black! We've never been disappointed - labs or lab mixes are just the best!

Your message really caught my interest, as we have just acquired a 6 week old Chocolate Lab puppy as well. We have had her for only 10 days . Our Meadow looks exactly like your beautiful Savannah. And our pup has a nipping problem too.
I really enjoyed your blog with the great entries and wonderful photos. I was wondering what your Brother's tips were to cure the nipping problem. I have to get a better supply of bandaides if this keeps up!
Unfortunately we do not have dog obedience classes which are handy to us. I think for the most part we are on our own.
Have fun with Savannah!

Corkie the Beagle sends a big camping welcome!! Arroooo! Corkie says dog treats are important to have. They are important to the camping experience. She told me to have you make sure you keep a shelf fully stocked....just in case you need to spoil your pup.

Corkie loves to go camping. She is not fond of riding loose in the truck and we like that. She is in a travel kennel when we travel and she treats it like a dog house when we are at our campsite.

We had a black lab. What a wonderful dog she was. 80 pounds of love and devotion.
I suspect your dog will grow out of the nibbling. She is about to lose her baby teeth in the next several months so provide many things that are hers to chew on.

When our lab was a puppy we taught her not to bite hands by spreading a little peanutbutter on the palm of our hands and saying "lick lick" while she licked it off. Then later, when she began to bite we would say "lick lick" and open our hands and she would stop biting and give a lick. Eventually the nibbling behavior stopped altogether.

Like your dog, we knew she was going to become a large dog and I didn't want her jumping up on me or other people. The training was very simple. We took advantage of a dogs natural instinct to not want to be captured. This technique only took a few times. When she would jump up we would take each front paw into our hands. We would hold her paws while we talked to her in a happy voice so she would not be scared. We just kept holding the paws. At first she was happy to stand there but upon realizing we weren't letting go she started to pull away. We just kept holding, she pulled harder, we held on, she started to nibble and get a bit panicky, hold a little longer. At that point we let her down and said "OFF" at the same time. It only took a few times before she associated being captured with jumping up on people.

Our dog Katie was a lovely pet to have. She was our first "baby". We got her 3 years before we had our first human baby. I'll never forget her.

Enjoy your pup.

Here's our beautiful baby now. She was 55 pounds 2 weeks ago at the vet.

She still nips, she still jumps up on us no matter what we do, but gosh we love that dog! We've hired a private trainer that has years of experience training labs for hunting, obedience and so forth. We go once a week and he promised we would get the wild out of that dog in a month. Don't want to break her spirit at all, and we won't, but she needs a bit of discipline to be able to be around people in a civilized manner. Not jumping up, scratching people, nipping on them and acting all retarded. Humane discipline is the key though, just from someone much more experienced than us and teaching us one on one.

Rhonda she's a beautiful pup, they just get better and better.
A little story about the jumping up, our Sofie did that when she was young and nothing we did would stop her, now lots of folks aren't going to like this but...my stepmother had Parkinsons disease so we we're very concerned that Sofie would knock her down, well she just loved Sofie and didn't want us to correct her but my Dad was fearful.
Long story short, two or three times when she jumped up he would tap his foot on her hind feet, she was startled and she didn't like it, he didn't hurt her, he would never do that, but it worked and she stopped doing it.
Might work or might not but it's worth a shot.
Have fun with Savannah, she's adorable!
