Leave valves closed until ready to dump as posted above. Always fill the black tank with a few gallons of water before starting to use it.

Leave both tank valves closed, empty the black first and leave the valve open and then open the grey water which will flush the black. Has worked for us. I think the black tank empties a lot better if there is liquid in it and at least 2/3 full. Some even take sink water and add it to the black tank so there is more liquid.

I wouldn't and never done that since at times I will leave the grey open with the black closed and I don't want cross contamination between the two tanks. I also want the max flow out of the black to force everything down the stinkly slinky and not any back into the grey tank. If on the road with a lot more day to day traveling I will wait until I get around 1/2 black tank contents and then fill it up and dump just to keep the weight down.

when I get to the CG I don't even put the hose on for a day or two. I have enough to do before I can sit back and enjoy camping. The hose thing is just a short cut for me. the tanks will hold several showers and a lot of black tank usage. So I don't even worry about it until it needs attention.

I echo the other replies, leave the valves closed till ready to dump. After dumping and getting ready to leave the CG I drop in about a 1/3 cup of powdered laundry detergent, 1/2 cup liquid Calgon water softener, and about 4 gals of fresh water in the B/W holding tank; so as to slosh around and desolve any remaining depris left in the tank while driving home. The tank never smells, and the level sensors stay cleaner too.

If you don't have a black tank sprayer mounted on the wall of the black tank opposite of the drain, get one. Then you can dump at your convenience, be it 1/3, 1/2, or 3/4 full.

I bet you were reassured by the completely unanimous opinions here! Many of the folks who advised you to leave it open are one day going to face the dreaded Poop Pyramid.

I think you need to re-read. NO ONE advised him to leave his black tank valve open! ALL said to leave it closed till 2/3 - full before dumping

The opinions that the gray stay open or closed were varied but that has nothing to do with the poop pyramid since it's gray water.

For us, we leave the gray open and black closed. We use a Flush King so filling the gray to rinse out the slinky after dumping the black isn't an issue since we backflush both tanks a couple of times and then let some clean clear water run through for a short while after that.

Yeah, we do what Old Blue does. It's considered good campground etiquette where we are in Florida for the Winter. We will still run a hose and backflush every couple weeks as well.

I hope this isnt too graphic, but you wouldnt use your house toilet without water, would you?

Black tank serves the same purpose. There has to be water somewhere to catch the waste. Holding tanks are just 'drop tanks'. Whatever goes thur just drops to the bottom. You need to keep some water in your black tank at all times. Even if you completely empty it, run 3-5 gallons of fresh water back into it. Add your chemicals if you use them. Dont run it dry. It would be like an outhouse. Yuck!

Then you also have the what ifs? The hose comes out of the ground. The wind, some kids playing, an animal/dog running by, whatever the case. You flush and it runs out onto the ground. At least when we drain, I look to see that it is still in the ground.

Leave it closed. Use the gray (other tank(s)) to flush your drain tube.
