California never seems to think of laying off or cutting salaries of state workers, like a business would have to do. Just punish people for not paying all the taxes they want.

Not too hard to find out this isn't true. Currently they are being furloughed with a 9.2% cut in pay and are being threatened with an additional 5% cut. Also, there are 5,000 jobs that are supposed to be eliminated. It's in the news around here.

Seems like nearly everthing in CA is in trouble. Personally, I think the inefficiencies of the state are to blame for the park closure. Why not privatize them?

I agree that if the same park was private it would make $$.

We had this same issue in Washington and I wrote to our representatives. The response was that the private workers do not get the same benefits and pay as the state workers.

How much pay and benefits would the state park worker get if the park is closed?

Another wise decision by Arny. Let the Indian Casino's pay the tab. Arny loves them.

That was at best an uninformed statement seeing as how Arnie has already done that. So the ones layed off now have no job and the ones that stayed now have less money to put back into the economy. Meanwhile for the illegal aliens and welfare folks that are draining our state it's business as usual. Heaven forbid taking money from "the less fortunate"!

it looks like none of the OHV parks are on the list, guess us off roaders are doing our part in supplying funds. Guess the greenies will probably want to take our funds to keep their parks open, Stand By.

I noticed this also and started trying to see why. Looks like they are staying open mostly because of the green sticker fees. Part of those fees make up a grant that partially funds OHV parks. Once the Governator sees this, he may decide to take those fees like he raids accounts for cities, counties and special funds (gas tax, etc.). It has been done before and could happen again.

They show so many state beaches and PISMO closing!! These are fee parks, if they operate in the red, raise the fees. I for one would be agreeable to pay more to keep them open.

I don't generally cross-post, but because the topic is the same, I'll include the post here as well.

Here are some figures on the state's contribution to the running of state parks:
Quote:

California spends roughly $400 million a year running 279 state parks and beaches, with roughly a third of the money coming from the state general fund. The rest comes from user fees, which account for slightly more than a quarter of the revenue; bond funds; gasoline taxes; federal money; and other sources.
http://news.aol.com/article/california-state-parks/503367

Because only about a quarter of current funding comes from user fees, it stands to reason that user fees will have to be increased significantly if the parks are privatized, as proposed in the other thread on this topic. (If the other souces of funding (bond funds, gasoline taxes, federal money) also dry up, then you're looking at a dramatic increase in user fees in order for privatization to be successful.)

Not very pretty.

So what will this do to RVing in California? We all can't fit in what's left in National Parks and National Forests in CA. Will we all be going into BLM or KOA? Should we buy stock in KOA?

I noticed that too, I saw Anza Borrego but not Ocotillo Wells

I bet they'll start charging camping fees like Imperial (Glamis) Dunes does.
