I vote for Holmes County in Ohio. Not near as commercial as Shipsee is getting to be. Beautiful country. Pull a car to get around the countryside to see the beautiful farms on the rolling country roads.

We spent a week in Ohio Amish country a couple of years ago, and loved it. We stayed at Amish Country Campgrounds in Winesburg, OH and would definitely stay there again. It was convenient to everything, very clean and quiet.
I'd also recommend booking a tour through the Amish country, as you will see and learn much more. We were fortunate enough to have a lady as our guide on the tour who had grown up in and just recently left the Amish faith. She was wonderful about answering questions and helping us to better understand the culture. We boarded the tour (only us and two other passengers) at the Behalt Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center in Berlin. Once you've taken the tour, we found it was much easier to explore on our own as well as have a better understanding for what we saw.
Have a wonderful time! -- Joyce

Ditto, we keep returning to this area and Old Mill Stream is our first choice.

Lancaster is one of our favorite stops. Mill Bridge Campground is a good stop. We've also stayed at Spring Gulch.

bsinmich wrote: Pennsylvania has a very nice Amish area with a good steam RR. Ohio has the largest Amish settlement and a RR that is usually diesel powered throughout the area. Indiana is near the electric train that can take you into Chicago for a quick pizza at Gino's. If you are into trains you have your choice. The people are very frriendly at all of them. Since Indiana is only an hour away for us we hit that one more often. You have to go to a little West to South Bend or Michigan City for the train. All of the places have great cheese factories, meat markets, and craft stores. My MH was made by Amish in Napanee, IN. and they do good work. Enjoy wherever you go. I love trains also.
Well! I wouldn't go that far as to say that your coach was made completely by Amish. Newmar and Gulf Stream do hire a lot of Amish people, but there are a lot working in those plants that are not Amish. That is the plants in Nappanee, Indiana. They do good cabinet work, thats for sure.

As for campgrounds, there are lots in the area, but Popehaven Campgrounds is in the middle of Amish territory. Mike and Pam are great hosts.
But you better make it early October, cause most of the campgrounds close by the middle of the month, and even earlier for some! I noticed someone mentioned trains. Both "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" and "The Natural" were partially filmed in the middle of Amish Country referred to above. The train station is still standing and the ball field is still used - South Dayton. And you see Amish buggys there every day. Also a store that sells Amish quilts.

We just got back home after almost 6 months on the road mostly south and southwest.
Our last stop was Beacon Hill CG in Intercourse. A 1/2 mile walk to all the quant shops in the village center. The CG is small place bordered by farms... sites 30, 31 are real nice with a small deck.
I would have been happy to stay another week in this area. We'll be back

We were at Old Mill Stream, last week; it was a nice cg. An Amish family drove through, every morning we were there, selling pastries. Country Acres was full, it's right down the road; they have a great complimentary Amish tour. We were in Ohio Amish Country and were not impressed with it, but we'll probably we back there in Sept/Oct, maybe we missed something. We have been to the Elkart area, many times, and will be heading that way, again, when we return from New Foundland. Have fun!

I vote with joppa. Beacon Hill at Intercourse is a great place to watch Amish farming. With binoculars, I spent a lot of time watching a farmer work with his team (5 mules abreast), as well as all the activity with other livestock around the house and barns. It really carries you back to an age that is long gone except for this micro culture that is being preserved by these people.
